Rose Skinner’s ambitious, vibrantly colored installations and sculptures look like the nightmares a child might have after eating too much candy.

Drawings of animals by Maria Elina

It’s funny that as alienated as we are from animals in this modern world, people still feel compelled to draw them as if it were one of our core instincts. Argentine artist Maria Elina does excellent drawings of anthropomorphized animals. Excellent, I say. Trust me, I look at the internet all day. Read more

Surreal sculptures by Ben Wheele

Honestly, writing about art (and music, for that matter) is kind of an awful task because good art speaks for itself. Such is the case with Ben Wheele’s surreal sculptures and videos. I use the word ‘surreal’ to describe 90% of the art I like not because I’m a lazy writer, but because there’s really not much more to say, and I like surreal and grotesque shit. Read more

French fashion designer and illustrator Cedric Rivrain draws how I’d love to be able to — with amazing attention to detail and patience. We got the inside word from Josh Diamond of New York experimental group, Gang Gang Dance, on the music that is moving him right now and he started off by propping the beautiful Ryuichi Sakamoto track, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence: ‘It’s just an amazing piece of music — serene, austere (in a heavy, beautiful way), emotional, a great mix of electronic sounds, patient, and a wonderful melody, with a quality of yearning for a better place. Every time I listen to this song, it puts me in a trance’. Read the rest of Gang Gang Dance’s Secret Playlist.

The Los Angeles musician, Ariana Delawari — aka Lion of Panjshir — is half Afghan and half Sicilian and makes wonderfully enlightened weirdo folk rock. I hope she takes that as a compliment! Her music is delicate and powerful and she is a pure artist. Everything she does has that magic light in it. She made her new album partially in Afghanistan, and many of the lyrics deal with the continued oppression of people’s liberties by the Taliban.
