Musta Aurinko’s black metal art
I listen to a lot of metal, and 90-percent of all the album covers I see are covered in skulls, demons, and goats. It’s rare that I see anything that’s really memorable, but I recently stumbled across Swedish black metal band Flagellant’s latest album, Monuments, and the cover really made me pause.
Sure, it’s a typical pile of horned and screaming skulls, but it was so well-rendered with really dramatic depth that I found myself staring at it a lot. Turns out, the cover is by Russian artist Musta Aurinko. Her entire body of work is stunning. I hope to see more album art done by her.

Drawings of animals by Maria Elina
It’s funny that as alienated as we are from animals in this modern world, people still feel compelled to draw them as if it were one of our core instincts. Argentine artist Maria Elina does excellent drawings of anthropomorphized animals. Excellent, I say. Trust me, I look at the internet all day. Read more

Surreal sculptures by Ben Wheele
Honestly, writing about art (and music, for that matter) is kind of an awful task because good art speaks for itself. Such is the case with Ben Wheele’s surreal sculptures and videos. I use the word ‘surreal’ to describe 90% of the art I like not because I’m a lazy writer, but because there’s really not much more to say, and I like surreal and grotesque shit. Read more

Double Parlour is an art collaboration between Ernie and Cassandra Velasco, who live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Their art dolls have a vintage feel to them, but with a modern twist. Sad looking, young ladies carry monsters in their arms as pets. Monsters have arms that seem almost too long to hold up. Characters in fun, striped swimwear don’t seem like they’re having the least bit of fun. Yet, they are immensely fun to gaze at. Read more

This odd, atmospheric animation by web artists Aaron Russ Clinger and Miltos Manetas is simple but effective, a finely rendered piece of interactive art. There are some pretty crazy things you can make the floating man do if you play around with this long enough.
Yat-Kha are a stunning Tuvan band that combines throatsinging and traditional folk music with straight-up rock. Their album ReCovers is an awesome collection of covers of songs by Led Zeppelin, Joy Division, and Motörhead among many others, reflecting their general approach to music on the rest of their impressive catalog. Despite the modern elements, the Moscow-based group still conjures the vast steppes and endless skies of the small Russian republic in southern Siberia.
