Sabbaba launch, Sydney
Mouth-watering food, graffitied interior, hot tunes … why wouldn’t you want to eat at Sabbaba’s latest restaurant in Newtown? Bang Gang DJ Jamie Doom and DJ Samir entertained everybody’s ears at the King Street grand opening last week as we sampled the finest Middle Eastern delicacies.
I’m talking about additive-free, authentic chickpea falafels served with pita bread, haloumi and cherry tomato skewers, hommus dips, spiced lean chicken, vine leaves and lamb kofta; dishes Sabbaba prides itself on. The highly-aesthetic graffiti adorned walls are courtesy of Sydney professional street artist/tattootist, Jeremy Hession (aka Mr Perso). I know who’s going to ink my next tattoo!

If you dig Arabic food… hit up El Basha also on King St . It’s Middle Eastern cuisine with a neat Mediterranean spin on it. Very lean and tasty shish (skewers) x.

For a good dose of morbid beauty it’s hard to go past artist-slash-taxidermist, Polly Morgan’s work. Each of her still life pieces are hauntingly delicate and dead clever, really.

Whenever I begin to take life too seriously, I head over to Indexed for a little humor treat. Never have math, formulas and graphs been so clever and witty. The creator of the site started it as a way to make fun of some things, sense of others. Somehow her little formula worked. She is now listed in TIME Magazine’s Top Blogs of 2008. And now Jessica Hagy is a published author. Enjoy exploring the inner-workings of her mind. It is simply delightful.
The Los Angeles musician, Ariana Delawari — aka Lion of Panjshir — is half Afghan and half Sicilian and makes wonderfully enlightened weirdo folk rock. I hope she takes that as a compliment! Her music is delicate and powerful and she is a pure artist. Everything she does has that magic light in it. She made her new album partially in Afghanistan, and many of the lyrics deal with the continued oppression of people’s liberties by the Taliban.

Definitely sounds like another place to check out Sydney side for the middle eastern flavour. Thanks for the piece!
