Alex Queral’s carved out Phone Book Faces
Phone books are a nuisance. They are heavy, take up a lot of space, and you get a new one every year, even though you can meanwhile find almost all the information in there online anyway. Alex Queral took discarded phone books and carved out 3D heads of famous people through thousands of pages with razor blades or an artist’s scalpel. The result? Simply amazing.

It is based on the recorded motion data of a dancer shot with three depth cameras, a complex procedure that resulted in a beautifully moving digital body, consisting of 22,000 points. Residential white pages are being discontinued by the phone company. This artist is about to lose his media. Projects Gallery is asking for any and all donations of white pages. No yellow pages, however. If you are in or near Philadelphia, please give us your phone books.

All these four-legged nobodies suddenly have our attention, and all they have to do is sneeze or fall asleep or act like they’re talking for us to fawn all over them. Heeding the growing chorus of people calling for these furry hacks to be cut back down to size, Fuck You Penguin aims to keep the egos of goats, puffins, moose, and pretty much every adorable creature on earth in check.
Channeling Justin Timberlake and Alan Vega, or both or neither, Spanish Dancer is on his own axis, spinning to the BPM of a lost drum. At one point, between moving back and forth between Providence, Rhode Island and Miami, Florida, he discovered punk and his uncle bought him a ratty 50 dollar Cruise VMI guitar to mess around with. Subsequently, Spanish Dancer material is a little snarky, self-aware, and fun, while still retaining all the complex spastic freakout moments of his prior band, A Trillion Barnacle Lapse. His debut album, Burned Up, Bred High, is out now and we have the lead single, The Hustler [listen below], available for free download via the Music Download section of the Lost At E Minor site.
