Sexist Vintage Ads

‘This is a man’s world’, or better said, ‘it used to be a man’s world’. At least, that’s the impression you get when you look at this mind-boggling collection of vintage sexist ads. Not that modern advertisements are free from negative connotations, but these slogans are exceptionally hair-raising (hopefully not just to us girls) and hence morbidly funny. Somehow.

Brilliant one line drawing series by Eemz

Eemz is an illustrator and mixed-media artist from Cairo. She has recently come up with a one line drawing series that I find quite adorable. Lots of her motifs look like minimalist doodling interpretations of characters from the Arabian Nights or the Pharaonic period. I would really love to see these turned into t shirt motifs or printed on postcards, so I can send them around to my friends. Read more

Fragmented photography art by Michael Mapes

Michael Mapes is a mixed-media artist from New York. By dissecting portrait photographs and compartmentalizing individual fragments within plastic bags, glass vials, magnifiers, in gelatin capsules and on insect pins, he creates intriguing pieces of art. Read more

Unnamed sound sculpture by Daniel Franke

Daniel Franke has created an amazing new kind of art. He calls it a sound sculpture. It is based on the recorded motion data of a dancer shot with three depth cameras, a complex procedure that resulted in a beautifully moving digital body, consisting of 22,000 points. The closer we look, the more abstract the sculpture becomes. Read more

If I were the CEO of a big company, I would totally hang a bunch of Argentine-born, Berlin-based artist Juan Arata’s paintings, not because they suit a corporate environment but because I like making people uncomfortable with very subtle visual cues. I said this at a job interview for a CEO position once, which is why I am not a CEO. Read more

This is a friend of mines’ blog. Her name is Nirrimi. She takes really amazing photos, and she makes great little films, too. I did the music score for one a while back. Her blog is like a novel that just plays out slowly but happens in real life. Well worth reading if you’re into photography and good, honest writing. Read more

Pioneering Australian designer Kara Smith can definitely give Urban Originals a run for their money. She creates the most innovative handbags for those that truly want to stand out. Detailed with lovely pockets and vintage buttons, Smith’s retro inspired designs literally transform original vintage fabrics into ‘one-off’ clutches, handbags, totes and accessories. I’m in love with her clutches! But yes, if you missed her over the week end at the Blue Mountain’s Leura Village Fair, she’s stocked in Glebe and Sydney’s Todae store, as well as at a variety of online outlets.
