Eemz is an illustrator and mixed-media artist from Cairo. She has recently come up with a one line drawing series that I find quite adorable. Lots of her motifs look like minimalist doodling interpretations of characters from the Arabian Nights or the Pharaonic period. Daniel Franke has created an amazing new kind of art. He calls it a sound sculpture. It is based on the recorded motion data of a dancer shot with three depth cameras, a complex procedure that resulted in a beautifully moving digital body, consisting of 22,000 points. Evan Stremke, a graphic designer from Wisconsin, has given us a morbid history lesson. The continuous subject of his marvelous poster series, Invitation To An Assassination, is the forced death of outstanding public figures. Interior design website, Apartment Therapy, just posted some amazing pictures of ’70s rock stars in their parents’ homes. My favorite is of David Crosby and his dad [below]. The two look so completely opposite of each other that it’s hard to believe that it’s Crosby’s real dad. They also look like they’re barely concealing the contempt they have for each other. Crosby’s father was an Academy-Award-winning cinematographer who shot Tabu and High Noon, amongst other well-known films. Read more
Last week when the 2008 ARIA nominations were released, I was so happy to see the recognition of Melbourne’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Their album Primary Colours is pure, unadulterated Aussie rock, standing out from the numerous electro releases we’ve had this year. The band manages to capture that wonderful pub-vibe without any pretension or tragic nostalgia. Primary Colours speaks to people who still seek an existence that is all about wearing ripped jeans, loitering and punching people in the face … not in a violent way, but because your fist flailed in that direction while you were thrashing around front of stage.
