Cheeky Tiki

Do you love a bit of cheeky tiki? Well, if you’re a fan of Polynesian tiki-style, or perhaps you’d like to wake up feeling tropical every-day, then this is the website for you. If you don’t know what ‘Tiki’ is, according to myth it was the name given to the first man and to the Gods of Polynesian culture.

Modern Tiki became popular in the 1940s in American War movies, and is now an icon of modern style and pop-culture decorating.

Cheeky Tiki is your one stop shop for all things Tiki. They have designed bars, offer graphic design for your next Tiki inspired logo, and can even ‘tikify’ your garden for your own tropical paradise. Or if you are after a bit of Tiki in your home, there are coconut shell cups, skull totems and a puffer fish lamp for you to buy (apparently the essentials for any great Tiki party?!)

Feel like you’d work better listening to Tiki music? I suggest King Kukulele and the Friki Tikis, Live at the London Luau 2006.

Melbourne artist Miso

The detail involved in Miso’s work really needs to be seen to be believed. I saw some of her latest work which involves hand-cut and pin pricked images of animals and cityscapes, and literally sat in awe at the beauty and was totally perplexed at the time and patience it would have taken to create these pieces. Often using white on white, or black on white, it re-iterated to me that sometimes in a world full of colour, there is a still a place for just white. Read more

Take ‘em boring books off the bookshelf! Artist Miler Lagos’s book igloo is gravity defying. Just don’t pull out the wrong book. The Colombian artist arranged the books in a neat dome to explore the dynamics between nature, culture, and material possessions. The structure uses nothing more than carefully aligned books.

Dear Miss Helena, one time host of children’s show Romper Room, you have a lot to answer for. Yes, squeaky clean Miss Helena of wholesome blouse and values, I have not forgotten those childhood years spent patiently glued to the television waiting for you to call out my name through the magic ‘looking glass’ — that portal to ‘good’ children everywhere. The nice thing about black metal is that it’s so hard for it to be co-opted. Between its often extreme ideologies and its inherently abrasive sound, it’s hard to imagine anyone trying to sell you a pair of sneakers with it. Even as some bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth have wormed their way into the mainstream, the vast majority of black metal fans and bands out there are happy to stay in the filthy pits of the underground.
