Meat.Salt.Time.

For people with a passion of food and design alike, this is one book that deserves to be added to the cookbook library. Part recipes, part storytelling, part graphic design, relays the process of Salumi making through the great work of Cristiano Creminelli — owner of Creminelli Fine Meats.

Designed by graduate student, Annabel Mangold, at the prestigious Portfolio Design Center, this book satiates my hunger for artisanal cuisine and quality illustrative work. Now, if only they could find a way to fit a real salami in the book.

Sqirl: a new preserve company

A year ago you could happily find me here, writing for Lost At E Minor, and cooking away in Los Angeles restaurant kitchens. A year later, I’ve launched Sqirl (for the old saying ‘Squirreling Things Away’), a preservation company dedicated to jams, jellies, and marmalades made from certified organic seasonal fruit no more than 200 miles from Sqirl’s commercial kitchen. Lobo’s Apple Cider

‘Tis the season for hard cider. So says Eric Asimov, and people tend to heed his recommendations. At least, I do. So while I scour my favorite haunts for the beautiful natural cider from Julien Frémont’s symbiotic Apple Orchard and Cattle Farm in Normandy, France (you must find this), I’m also looking for Lobo’s honest Cider rendition: cloudy and unfiltered from Adelaide Hills, Australian apples. Interactive Salt and Pepper shakers

How often is it that you have to break something in order to make it work? Rarely, I hope. Unless, of course, it’s Studio Kahn’s new Salt and Pepper shakers. The two shakers are conjoined by their pouring ends, which one must effectively snap like a tree (with some ‘Hi-Yah!’) in order to make them function. Read more

I definitely want this. Looks like a treat to the senses. Maybe the Babbette’s Feast of cook books.

I find it horrible.
Those pics make me sick. Imagine that instead of being pigs they were dogs.
ANIMALS DO FEEL PAIN, and trying to make it look nice, artistic and sophisticated is disgusting.
When i look at those photos i can’t see any beauty on them, the only i can do is smell those poor animals’ panic and blood, and hear their screams…

Illustrator John Cuneo has jumped on the whole blackbirds falling out of the sky story with the announcement of his ‘new children’s book to be published by TooSoon Press’. We can hardly wait.

Firekites, from small town Australia (Newcastle to be exact), are my new musical obsession, and have been since early yesterday when their song Autumn Story randomly burst into my headphones and latched itself deep into my inner ear iPod. I wish they’d been around when I last lived in Sydney; it would have been well worth the two hour drive north to see them play. The whole album (The Bowery) is beautiful, but this song especially rings out with poignancy. I love the subtle sound of the fingers sliding across the guitar frets, the gently whispered vocals, which hint at secrets and cheeky serenades, and the sense of soulful introspection that tangles itself elegantly amongst its minor chord tapestry.

Those old issues of Popular Mechanics that forecasted the wondrous technological developments of tomorrow now seem dated and more representative of the times in which they were published than the times they tried to predict. Read more

Music isn’t necessarily a serious venture. It’s almost funny when you find some you know will grate to dust the stiff upper lipped critics of the world. Every now and then I like the type of sound that hops around the edge of your ears without working its way into your brain and messing up the seratonin levels. And Californian 16-piece tropical-ska-pop group, Still Flyin’, do just that for me. It’s a good laugh, quite catchy, and an awesome live experience so I’m told: especially with the sun out, a can of cider in your hand and a bunch of grinning faces skanking around you.

Jeans are a science, a science based on the deep knowledge of denim, washes and patterns, according to Dr. Denim, who have certainly twisted and turned every single atom of all their jeans into perfection. Each pair exudes a progressive design, made of superior quality at fair prices. My high waists have become the most desirable item in my wardrobe due to the denim’s strength which magically sculpts to your body yet leaves you embracing the comfort of wearing tracky-dacks. Seriously, there is nothing more important than owning a good-fitting pair of jeans. Dr. Denim delivers unisex designs that appeal to everyone.
