Back to nature with Cate Davies

Cate Davies has a thing for nature photography and she’s good at it too. Her recipe isn’t new, but that doesn’t matter. Looking at her picturesque Flickr portfolio makes me want to take a day off and go to the countryside for a day of laying in the grass skygazing.

Brilliant one line drawing series by Eemz

Eemz is an illustrator and mixed-media artist from Cairo. She has recently come up with a one line drawing series that I find quite adorable. Lots of her motifs look like minimalist doodling interpretations of characters from the Arabian Nights or the Pharaonic period. It is based on the recorded motion data of a dancer shot with three depth cameras, a complex procedure that resulted in a beautifully moving digital body, consisting of 22,000 points. The closer we look, the more abstract the sculpture becomes. Read more

Sara Watson, a second-year student at the University of Central Lancashire, recently painted a car to make it blend chameleon-like into the background, creating the illusion that it has become invisible. A recycling firm that wanted some publicity donated the car to Watson, who spent three weeks meticulously painting it to resemble the parking lot in which it was parked.

At first glance you might think you are in the middle of a Sim City when you look at the architectural lettering of London-artist Jing Zhang. Little people working, climbing tiny ladders, boxing up stuff. Unfocus a bit and you will find some very modern hieroglyphs that would make some future kid happy to learn the alphabet. Read more

Curxes (pronounced ‘curses’) are one of the most exciting new bands you’ll hear all year. Roberta Fidora and Macaulay Hopwood make music that will suck you in, invade your brain, and make you lose sense of time. Their music is somewhere between Depeche Mode and Crystal Castles.

Strathcona Stockings make quirky, hand-printed, limited run stockings in their Vancouver studio. If you’re unable to get your hands on a pair (they seem to be pretty much sold out online), the cool and curious array of imagery on their Tumblr site is at least worth checking out. Read more
