The French Kissers: a movie about making out

French kids that look like real kids shoving real tongues awkwardly past pimply cheeks into real throats. The actors in The French Kissers actually look the age of the people they’re supposed to be portraying, and they’re all as immature, petty and accidentally hilarious as you’d expect.

At times this is an incredibly uncomfortable film, but that’s all part of the adolescent experience. There are the cool kids, the dorks, the inevitable crossing over between groups, floods of emotion over seemingly petty issues, maladjusted parents, masturbation jokes and a welcome lack of the big realisations that seem to plague similar films. Good fun all round, really.

Melancholia: a film by Lars von Trier

I wish there were a lot more of the types of films made by Lars von Trier. Each is very different but still distinctly von Trier, and each is superb. Melancholia is the follow up to the wonderfully confronting Antichrist. This is all about the end of the world, and told with an honesty and pacing that is probably much closer to the actual end of the world than all the Hollywood crap would have you believe. Read more

His drawings are so realistic that, after first thinking it was photography, you then search for a ‘zoom button’ to get the most details you can. Then, slowly, the drawings seem to be moving, they appear to be alive, something is coming, and the story, after a minute, is already all around you. Read more

When I did the Master Cleanse diet a few years ago — the one where you consume nothing but lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper for ten days — I sat at work looking at pictures of food as if they were porn. Scanwiches would have gotten me hot and bothered like nothing else.

I have known Hayden for almost twenty years. He has always released quality music and that is why he can wait four years between releases and his fans are still there. His latest album — In Field & Town — went straight into heavy rotation in our home and I think will extend his fan base further than even he might like.
