Busan, Korea

Bright lights, big city. No, I’m not talking about Busan, Korea, the second largest city in Korea. It’s one of those unknown gems that have an array of activities, shopping haunts as well as a great nightlife.

It’s a buzzing city with an amazingly large fish market which has every sort of fish known to man. And some species you would not see in your everyday fishmonger. There are hundreds of small laneways branching out from the main roads, with each street hosting specialty shops of women’s and men’s clothing, shoes, handbags, you name it.

Monkey Lounge in Shanghai

For a city that never sleeps, Shanghai is one of those strange cities that has bars and restaurants constantly opening and closing. But hidden amongst the bustle of the city is Monkey Lounge, a hip watering hole where the clientele is unpretentious and the cocktail list is limited but perfect. Read more

Sydney’s Grasshopper Bar

My love for laneway bars instigated after the City of Sydney Council drew up plans for a temporary venue called 7 Metre Bar. Since then, I’ve found several bars hidden in nooks and crannies all around the city. A particular favorite is Grasshopper, an up-and-coming bar tucked away in Temperance Lane, just off George Street. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere chilled, and you can order any drink, just as long as it’s served in a jar. It’s cool and funky, with retro ’70s armchairs scattered around the room.

Sydney’s Berta Wine Bar

Laneway culture has been growing in Sydney, and bars and restaurants are taking full advantage of this. Tucked in a nameless laneway off Wentworth Street is Berta, a new modern wine bar that not only offers boutique Italian wines, but sumptuous food. Read more

Brendan Monroe just released a gorgeous monograph though the Parklife Gallery in San Francisco. From what I can tell, this looks to be a pretty thorough, beautiful showcase of Monroe’s work to date. For those of you really looking to splurge there is in fact a special edition of his book as well. This edition comes with an individual intaglio print as well as an accordion fold book published by Monroe all enclosed in a beautiful custom made slip case as a signed and numbered edition of fifty-five.

The Big Picture’s photo essays are some of the best around: insightful, timely and often confronting in the way great photo essays are. Complementing The Big Picture is The Big Caption, a parody site ‘wherein jokes and statements are made using typography’. Sometimes insightful and always snarky, it pairs poignant photography with blunt observations using a thread of hostility. Read more

French duo Trop Tard make straight-faced, Suicide-esque, synth-and-guitar electro tunes that sound like dark rituals performed in the catacombs beneath the streets of Paris. Repetitive, bleak, and cold, this is dance music for the shambling undead.
