With Halloween just passed, talk show host Jimmy Kimmel put out a challenge to all parents of America to deliver the ultimate Halloween trick to their kids: telling their children the day after Halloween that they had eaten all of their hard earned candy. Oh, and to video the reaction, of course! What sounds like a cruel joke is all forgotten when you’re laughing at the unpredictable and sometimes adorable reactions. I know I wouldn’t have handled it well.

Not a lot of architecture firms think a lot about the demolition of old houses unless it’s as a means to make way for new buildings, but Hutchinson and Maul of Seattle drilled holes in condemned farmhouses, sometimes inserting tinted acrylic rods in them, creating beautiful displays of light as the sun streamed in and giving the structures a flourish of renewed life before their ultimate destruction. This incredible photo by Robert B. Haas for National Geographic captures a ‘shifting flock of flamingos assuming a whimsical shape in the Gulf of Mexico’. Birds of a feather flocking together to form one giant bird? Brilliant.
Improv Everywhere strikes again with a spontaneous musical in a Los Angeles mall. Wireless microphones hooked up to the mall’s PA system ensured the feeding masses didn’t slip into Cinnabon-induced comas until after the show was over. Note especially the angry dude in sunglasses at about 2:51 — apparently he thinks nothing can ever top Rent.
Musicians in Jacksonville, Florida, often plop themselves amongst breakfasting families to nurse their hangovers at the Fox Restaurant. The food is a step above normal greasy spoon fare, but is just as cheap, with a full breakfast costing as little as three dollars. They even offer bananas as an alternative to grits or hash browns.
When I did the Master Cleanse diet a few years ago — the one where you consume nothing but lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper for ten days — I sat at work looking at pictures of food as if they were porn. Scanwiches would have gotten me hot and bothered like nothing else.
The Phenomenal Handclap Band is a collection of musicians and artists from Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn who perform live as an eight-member powerhouse, creating an eye-popping spectacle more akin to a spiritual church revival than a rock show. is it TooLate? Is it? Never! This Italian-made watch has a beautiful minimal design, comes in lots of colors, is water proof and goes for less than $30. Hot damn! 10,000 of them were sold in the first ten days after their release and half a million in it’s first year of distribution. Apparently the Italians are wearing two or three of them together as part of some bizarre fashion clique. Wonder if the rest of the world will catch on?

My friend Josh Van Horne, a local Baltimore artist, did this amazing mural in our neighborhood that depicts the history of this warehouse-laden area.
Pitched as ‘Ulterior Motives in Contemporary Art’, Disorder Disorder is running until November 14 at Penrith Regional Gallery. It’ll be well worth the trip out west of Sydney: the Australian, Japanese, American and European cast reads like a warriors of street art roundup and includes Mike Giant, Ed Templeton, Anthony Lister [artwork above], Ozzie Wright, and Jonathan Zawada.
