Melbourne’s Cibi Cafe

Cibi, in Japanese meaning “a little one,” is exactly what you feel like when taking your chopsticks to your breakfast on a sunny Saturday morning in the backstreets of oh-so-cool Collingwood, Melbourne. It’s an exciting new experience tucking into a bowl of soba noodles for breaky or wandering around the Japanese trinket store connected to the café. Cibi have created a space full of sensory delights where you can dawdle and daydream, bringing out the inner cibi in all of us.

Il Fornaio cafe in Melbourne

If you were counted among the over one million Australians that obsessively tuned in to Masterchef each week, recounting the details on Twitter and biting your nails along the way, then you may indeed be experiencing the emptiness of withdrawal. Well, we’ve got a cure: supremely satisfying sweets made by award-winning Melbourne-born pastissier and Masterchef guest chef, Philippa Sibley. Read more

Monk Bodhi Dharma cafe, Melbourne

Despite its inconspicuous location (in a parking lot alleyway) Monk Bodhi Darma is Melbourne’s newest treat to the café society’s ranks. Café connoisseurs are filling this cosy cavern of exposed brick walls and long oak tables to be served the delicious grind from Five Senses. Sustainability is at the core of the global menu, with locally sourced organic produce making specials such as Zanzibarian black eye pea stew. I’m hooked.

Proud Mary cafe, Melbourne

We are spoiled for choice when it comes to the best cafes in Melbourne. It still amazes when I come across a spot that boasts the best coffee, the best atmosphere, and the best menu. It may often be populated by bespeckled, part-time bloggers and the like, but Proud Mary, in Collingwood has it all going on without any of its neighbourhood hipster pretention. Did I mention the one of a kind custom-made Synesso coffee machine? Try their summer bircher muesli topped with fresh mango, tangy green apple and crushed nuts. It really is THE BEST.

Coffee Joulies

Tom Fruin’s Glass House in Copenhagen

New York-artist Tom Fruin shows us how one man’s trash can become one city’s treasure. His latest creation, the Kolonihavehus, is situated in the plaza of the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen. Throwing back to the 19th century Danish tradition of Kolonihave — ‘little house with garden’ — Fruin’s sculpture is made from a thousand reclaimed pieces of plexiglass found in dumpsters around the city. I’m so fortunate to be the proud aunt of a niece and two nephews, not just because they’re adorable, but so I can get away with wearing crayon rings. My inner-child wants the whole collection designed by Timothy Liles so I can create a masterpiece whenever I see paper. Available in a packaged set of four (red, blue, yellow and black). Read more

Austin band The Low Lows are one of my most prized finds of the year so far. It’s introspective music — staggered harmonies delivered by a distant, agonised voice that filters through a wall of tranquil guitar distortion and measured drumming. Every instrument carries a powerful emotion, sometimes keeping their distance from one another, floating up and around the airwaves, and other times colliding and crashing back to earth.

Put simply, Sydney fashion label Andrea and Joen create the hottest shoes around. You’ll find a combination of pure sophistication and rock and roll attitude in every pair from their range. Their sexy style has become a must for contemporary women, including Gwen Stefani, Katy Steele and Pink, all of whom have been seen proudly flaunting them around town.
