Bad Romance: Lissie covers Lady Gaga
by We have all heard our fare share of Lady Gaga covers, but this one tops them all! This cover of Bad Romance is honest, soft, raw, and just awesome. Now, I’m a Gaga fan: anything I can dance to is a win for me. But there is something about Lissie’s gusty voice that makes me love the lyrics of this song so much more. Though her ripped jeans and plaid shirt can’t compare to Gaga’s outrageous get-ups, Lissie has proved with this cover that true talent is just as good as Alexander McQueen alien looking shoes.

I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to revel in New Jersey artist Heejin Roh’s impossibly subtle graphite drawings in person recently. Roh is a fresh out graduate of the SVA Illustration Master’s Program, which had it’s annual student show recently. Having been so impressed with Roh’s work at the show, I was pleased to discover that her images translate so nicely into a tiny jpeg on my computer screen. I only wish there were more!

Back in the ’90s, just as the gangsta rap phenomenon was winding down and hip-hop was fragmenting into its own subgenres, Prince Paul and RZA kicked off the short-lived horrorcore fad with their group Gravediggaz. At the time, the melding of dark, gothic themes with hardboiled rap seemed gimmicky and awkward, a strange extension of the early and awful attempts to bridge hip-hop and metal, but on closer listen, the now defunct supergroup was way more innovative than they were given credit for.
