On the trail of the Johannesburg Experience
by I was recently posted to Johannesburg, South Africa as part of a splendid media trip to cover the Smirnoff Experience featuring Tiësto and BLK JKS. Naturally, the video journalist in me decided to make a mini-documentary on the whole thing. I had the privilege to interview the big Dutchman himself, as well as play with baby lion cubs, bike around Soweto village, experience nights out full of excessive liquor. One moment to look out for: a South African journalist asking Tiësto why he’s following David Guetta’s production trends. Priceless!

Maybe it’s because I’m regularly checking in on her profoundly candid blog, or because her work speaks to me in some uncanny way, but I’ve always felt a powerfully calming and comforting relation to the work of illustrator, Penelope Dullaghan. With a complete lack of pretense, Dullaghan creates softly textured images that amazingly, even when commissioned, still manage to feel as if they’re just as much a piece of the artist’s state of mind. The uber-hip French producer M83 has compiled a Secret Playlist for us in which he props Brian Eno, Julee Cruise, and Tears For Fears’ Head Over Heels: ‘This song was the biggest influence for my new album. Chester French are Ivy League prep boys from Massachusetts who have mastered an interesting Beatlesque sound tinged with Motown influences. When, in May 2007, the duo — D.A. and Max — completed their recording and their degrees (in African American Studies and Social Anthropology respectively), they were snapped up by Pharrell Williams’ label Star Trak.
