It’s midwinter in Sydney and I’m getting over my third or fourth cold. I need a holiday. And Heron Island, 72km off North Queensland, is booked in to do the trick. Located on a coral cay, there’s diving from your door, and as it’s a protected habitat, there’s a wide array of wildlife — including nesting turtles and an abundance of Australian birdlife. I’m counting the days.
