New Banksy artwork critiques London Olympics, perhaps
That elusive street art urchin (and we mean that in the nicest possible way), Banksy, has struck again in London, with a new artwork mysteriously appearing on the wall of a shop on Whymark Avenue, Turnpike Lane. As is to be expected, the street art sends a subtle social message, though so subtle in this case that Banksy-philes are torn over whether it is criticising the upcoming Olympics, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee or last summer’s riots. How can you not love a band called ¡Apeshit!? Their name says it all. I got to catch these guys tour at a warehouse in Bed-Stuy the other night as they were capping off their most recent tour, and even though there were only 20 or so people in the audience by the time they went on, their set was absolutely epic, culminating in frontman Pat Berran being hoisted up and subsequently dropped by the drunken, sweaty, and heavily tattooed crowd. If you love fast, spastic, intensely brutal punk, this band will make you crap your pants.
It’s official, I’m back into jewellery after detoxing from the 2001 chandelier earring craze. Aurélie Bidermann used to work at Sotheby’s New York in their Impressionist and Contemporary Art department but has been slowly raising though the ranks as one of the most innovative jewellery designers around today. Her website doesn’t showcase her fantastic Spring 09 pieces. Check out the accessory report on style.com for a good look at some of her new work.
