They Draw and Cook

A couple of weeks ago, Gerry Mak cooked us up an impressive posting on Recipe Look, a British Culinary Site dedicated to illustrated recipe instructions. Curbing my A.D.D. for five minutes, I soon found myself with the ingredients for ‘Eggplant with your favorite cheese’. Was Eggplant and Cheese a winning combination? Let’s just say, the charm lies in the drawing.

But now, it seems, that Recipe Look has a bit of competition from a new blog — They Draw and Cook — a user submitted site where recipes are rendered by artists, illustrators, and designers. Longtime Lost At E Minor friend, James Gulliver Hancock, recently presented his favorite recipe, the Dorset Apple Cake, which includes Butter, Apples, Tea, and, well, Grandad. James, can I come over a borrow a cup of Grandad?!

Sqirl: a new preserve company

A year ago you could happily find me here, writing for Lost At E Minor, and cooking away in Los Angeles restaurant kitchens. A year later, I’ve launched Sqirl (for the old saying ‘Squirreling Things Away’), a preservation company dedicated to jams, jellies, and marmalades made from certified organic seasonal fruit no more than 200 miles from Sqirl’s commercial kitchen. Lobo’s Apple Cider

‘Tis the season for hard cider. So says Eric Asimov, and people tend to heed his recommendations. At least, I do. So while I scour my favorite haunts for the beautiful natural cider from Julien Frémont’s symbiotic Apple Orchard and Cattle Farm in Normandy, France (you must find this), I’m also looking for Lobo’s honest Cider rendition: cloudy and unfiltered from Adelaide Hills, Australian apples. I re-read both the Hernanadez brothers collected works about once a year and there’s not a lot between them. But somehow the subject matter and sheer storytelling verve of Locas tips the balance for me. I’m constantly in awe of how they both can chronicle the lives of huge casts of characters. The hardback collections of Locas and Palomar are absolutely essential. Read more

I’ve seen free-jazz spazz outfit Microkingdom many times in their hometown of Baltimore, but their recent gig opening for Skull Defekts was really tight. I found myself head banging to jazz! That hasn’t happened in a while.

Anytime you find Houndstooth and Hoody in the same sentence you know it will be a good day. Well, today has been a great day and New Dandyism, the lovechild of a conglomate of lusty designers — Sons by Obedient Sons, wood wood and Call of the Wild — is the reason. It’s a surprisingly coherent and articulate project for one cooked up in a kitchen filled with chefs. Read more
