As tea geek, I could go on and on about the purity of the flavor found in Ineeka teas, and describe nuances in a vocabulary usually reserved for wine cellars. However, I am just going to tell you that it is good. Real good! Ineeka is the only tea company in North America that grows its own tea and they use a bio-dynamic growing system to do so (think fair trade and organic growing, but super sized).

This tea is swell not only for its flavor, environmental and social consciousness, but also for its design. It comes in brew Tashes, large open ended tea bags that hang on the rim of your cup and let you steep whole leaf tea on the go. The Tashes themselves come in airtight tea tins that keep the teas fresh while looking good and can be recycled or reused.

We Are Tea

Anyone who knows me knows I am partial to a nice sip of vodka. But in the day time, it’s a different matter, well before midday anyway. Then it’s all about the mighty cuppa. And We Are Tea share the same passion. Operating from opposite St. Pauls cathedral, not only do they have a cool tea shop, but they make their own award-winning blends. Trust me, these guys are turning the art of tea into alchemy.

Tastea at The Block, Orange County

Mmm! Tastea is a tea lover’s paradise. I discovered the herbal slushy, smoothie bar while visiting Orange County and was surprised to learn that there are only two stores in California so far. Each tea beverage combines the best flavours of the East and West, resulting in an Asian-American treat. My favourite is the lychee-based Lychee Peachee drink with a green jelly add-on.

This month sees the relaunch of Crabtree & Evelyn’s fine food range under a new packaging design by Smith and Milton. In response to a challenging brief to inject life and character back into the brand, Smith and Milton delved deep into the Crabtree & Evelyn archives and found generations of beautiful hand-drawn illustrations, reworking them into an opulent wrapping to deliver stunning results. Shorts Brewery, Michigan

This last week I was in Michigan with my sister and soon to be brother in law/beer aficionado. We trotted around the micro-breweries of northern MI and our merry little band of travelers (one gets fairly merry when you are tasting flights of 6-8 beers at every pub) found Shorts Brewing Company to be the best of the best. Sleigh Bells to play Pitchfork Music Festival

I was given my first couple Sleigh Bells tracks by a friend last Fall and haven’t they blown up since then! The duo will be playing at the upcoming Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. Their debut album, Treats, has just come out with new, and old (and improved), tracks that are noisy, growly, and sexy fun.

I wish I could make it to the first solo exhibit of South African artist Nicholas Hlobo. His found-material sculptures confront issues of race, gender, and sexuality that still confound contemporary South African culture as it does the rest of the world. Read more

I am interested in man as a phenomenon. And observing and documenting its object in a vacuum. I am especially interested in the tracks man puts on other people in the world around them. I collect these tracks together and keep them in my paintings. Read more

Austin band The Low Lows are one of my most prized finds of the year so far. It’s introspective music — staggered harmonies delivered by a distant, agonised voice that filters through a wall of tranquil guitar distortion and measured drumming. Every instrument carries a powerful emotion, sometimes keeping their distance from one another, floating up and around the airwaves, and other times colliding and crashing back to earth.
