Feather Art
London-based installation artist, Kate MccGwire, creates ‘flight of fancy’ pieces from pigeon feathers. While the process of collecting thousands of feathers must be painstaking, the result is awe-inspiring and emotive. I suspect it would be hard not to sneak a touch when seeing her exhibition in person though!

Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared animation
I’ve been a fan of This Is It Collective’s work since I saw their first video, Bad Things That Could Happen. This Is It is a collective of illustrators, animators, artists and designers based in London and they produce colourful, well-designed animations and videos. This one in particular made me snigger with joy.
Oddities abound at the Wellcome Collection London
Napoleon Bonaparte’s toothbrush, Charles Darwin’s walking stick, Lord Nelson’s razor, pieces of tattoed human skin from 1850, male anti-masturbation devices from 1880 … all those pieces are in the Wellcome Collection permanent exhibition in London. Half morbid and half historic, they have excellent temporary exhibitions, but their permanent one is worth the visit to this not very famous museum.
One Dot Zero is a great website showcasing contemporary visual arts projects based in London. I found it when researching alternative forms for my course in Film and Theatre. But it’s also a good outlet for filmmakers, amateur animators, or artists to get involved in.

In 1949, renowned LIFE photographer Gjon Mili visited Pablo Picasso in the South of France. Using a small flashlight in a dark room, Picasso created wildly free and fluid drawings while Mili snapped away. The resulting images are, erm, electric. Read more

These photographs are so good I bought the book. I discovered Merkley??? on Flickr. This bearded photographer is a slightly unnerving straight-talking San Franciscan whose images of friends (mainly wannabe models) push the boundaries of symmetry, skin tone, colour and pleasure to the very limits.
Sufjan Stevens creates autistic music for introverts — soft, shy, naive, full of shadows, windows, and insecurities. Yet it all sounds slightly forced, his enigmatic songwriting as comforting as it is unsettling.
Formed in New York and now based in Rotterdam and Berlin, SMAQ is a collaborative studio for architecture and urbanism by architects Sabine Müller and Andreas Quednau. Here they have created an interesting installation called Bad (bath) in the Solitude Palace Gardens in Stuttgart with the premise of creating a usable sculpture which entwines a 1000 metre long garden hose throughout a timber structure. Downtownfrombehind is a photo blog featuring creative types (artists, models, chefs, musicians) riding their bikes around downtown New York City. The goal is to highlight those who make downtown New York what it is today.
Setting Sun’s cover of Tom Petty’s You Got Lucky was recently released as part of Buffet Libre DJ’s compilation CD, Rewind 2. Says frontman, Gary Levitt, of their version on the song: ‘We got back from our European tour on Christmas Eve with a December 27th deadline for the track looming. It was finally started on December 26th and then sent off completed the next day. It was a great exercise in having to let some things go. That’s twenty-four hours out the door complete, old school style. That’s how records used to be made.
