17th Biennale of Sydney

The 17th Biennale of Sydney is currently on, showcasing 440 works by 166 artists and collaborators from around the world. And nothing illustrates the international and eclectic nature of the collection better than the identity put together by London-based creative studio, Barnbrook. The modular design combines awkward typography, symbolism and forced bad kerning, layering them together to represent the diversity of the works and the unity of the collection. For design geeks, Creative Review has a very interesting read on the vision behind the identity and what makes it tick.

Retrograd: a vintage design store in Copenhagen

In a town where even your local bank branch hangs designer lights, and the high street has everything a product nerd could hope for, it’s hard to imagine you might still find some hidden gems. Fortunately, in Copenhagen, this is not the case. Read more

Awesome moving gifs by Davidope

Budapest-based creative genius Davidope has created this collection of hypnotic gifs to get us walking like chickens. I’m sure of it. If not that, then maybe we’re all going to quit smoking and fall asleep at the click of his fingers. Whatever the reason, these gifs will certainly send you into a trance. By giving life and movement to these modular graphics, he somehow gives them a sense of purpose and personality. Read more

Tea Pot Cafe in Fort Kochi, India

For anyone traveling to India, the state of Kerala is a must. And for anyone traveling to Kerala, The Tea Pot Cafe in Fort Kochi is an absolute must. Relaxed and elegantly worn goes with the territory in these parts, but this particular cafe has all the local tastes and flavours, with the quirkiness and natural cool you might find people trying to replicate in other parts of the world. A homage to the teapot, this cafe offers food and hot and cold beverages in an interior littered with vintage teapots, trinkets and relics from the old tea trade days of the Malabar coast.

Thanks to Tor Weeks, we all have some inspiration for moustaches this year. For all the typophiles out there. And just in time for Movember, too [design by Old Tom Foolery].

Elizabeth Fox uses an original but retro-feeling style to contrast contemporary notions of gender, identity, and social positioning with those of the 1950s. Read more

I’ve been reading Julia Wertz’s web comic, The Fart Party, which is simply a first person account of her every day life. The artwork is pretty rudimentary, but that works to the comic’s advantage, making it rather accessible and earnest seeming. Updated every few days, it’s not hard to keep up, and you never have to wait long to get your next fix.

Things continue to improve for New York’s metal scene, if Batillus are any indication. The sludge/doom trio from Brooklyn offer crushingly heavy, down-tuned and down-tempo instrumental riffage that sounds like what a mutant that has crawled out of Newtown Creek might have on his iPod. The band recently added vocalist Fade Kainer of Inswarm (Jarboe’s touring band) to its line-up.

Do I like dogs? Yes. Do I like jumpers? Yes. Do I think WARMI’s jumpers with dogs on them are amazing? I sure do! The brand was created in 2008 by French-Colombian designer Sylvia Toth and all the clothes are hand knitted by women weavers of the villages of Tausa and Sutatausa in Colombia. Read more
