Soft vinyl toys by Max Toy Co.

I love the toys that come out of Max Toy Co. I’m a big fan of Tokusatsu and Super Sentai programs, and these toys have come out of a huge love for these things. They’re made in the same way a lot of Japanese soft vinyl toys are made, but some of the ideas Mark Nagata comes up with exaggerate the craziness of the genre even more, and I can’t get enough of them. His Kaiju Negora Konatsu toy is a prime example of that.

Haunted House Rock art exhibition in Sydney

John D-C is a Sydney-based graphic artist, print maker and toy customizer. His exhibition, Haunted House Rock, showing between November 19 and December 14 at Sweets Workshop Shop in Summer Hill, is a hideously, abominable creation, monstrously mashing two of the artist’s favorite subjects: The Monsters of Popular Culture and The Golden Age of Rock and Roll. The exhibition features limited edition giclée prints and posters, gocco prints, and customised toys. Read more

Hiroshi Yoshii

If you like toys, you’ll love the work of Hiroshi Yoshii, one of the most acclaimed digital artists in Japan. Alongside his 3D animation work, he makes amazing toys. They either put a huge smile on my face or crack me up. They are cute, wacky and clever. I love them. Read more

FAIL! Man wears crack jacket to drug trafficking court date

From the ‘what were you thinking’ file comes this news report of a man in Fort Lauderdale accused of drug trafficking who turned up to court for his trial wearing a jacket with a cartoon recipe for cooking crack cocaine. Yes, smart indeed.

New Banksy artwork angers the Catholic Church

Banksy has struck again, this time offending the Catholic Church with a bold artwork that critiques their stance on ongoing child abuse scandals. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. And who are we to disagree? Read more

Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design

Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

During my recent time in New Orleans, I got to see in person the amazing piece by public installation artist Candy Chang called Before I Die, installed on the side of an abandoned house in the Marigny neighborhood. It invites passers by to fill in the blanks with what they’d like to do before they die. One of them read “live in New Orleans,” which I can definitely relate to. Read more

Not much more needs to be said about this. Ricky Gervais, the funniest man in England, meets Larry David, the funniest man in America. Wit and genius collides. Very, very clever.

Old-school, timeless French is the vibe of creative agency Mother London’s latest campaign for Stella Artois. Titled Recyclage de Luxe, these massive, 1960s vintage-esc posters lining the walls of London’s tube aim to unabashedly promote Stella’s green credentials. The vibrant, revival ads, along with other campaign gimmicks, are all part of the brand’s efforts to boost its environmental image. Read more

The demise of our beloved print medium is a harsh reality that a lot of independent magazines have been dealing with for the past five years at least. So we all frequent a ton of different sites that we like and one in particular that’s really given itself a pick-me-up online, for the better good of longevity and legacy, is Planet magazine. The frontman for Sydney trailblazers, Paper Scissors, has just dropped his first solo EP under the alias of Pork Pies, and it’s an absolute beaut. Like the Paper Scissors’ more low-key numbers, there’s a real feeling of raw nostalgia running through the record. Jai Pyne’s distinctive vocals linger on your eardrums for a while after they’ve ceased, anchored down by a poignancy and sense of longing.
