Select Gender at Dumbo’s Farmani Gallery
First time curators, Rafael Soldi, Paolo Morales and Elle Perez, have brought together a diverse group of fourteen young photographers for the Select Gender show at the Farmani Gallery in Dumbo Brooklyn. The show has everything from J. Aiden Simon’s self-portraits as a trans man, to Sarah Sudhoff’s photographs of University of Texas sorority, Delta Gamma, during rush week.
Probably the most immediate and confronting image is by Yale MFA candidate, Katie Koti, and shows a nude person shot against a stark Winter background. This image, featured prominently in the gallery, leads you to question the surrounding portraits: are the subjects gay, straight, trans, and, more importantly, does it even matter? The show leaves no gender group unrepresented as it turns upside down society’s need to define gender boundaries. Runs through till May 22 at the Farmani Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. Boring still life objects turned into intriguing erotic images
Amsterdam-based photographers Blommers and Niels Schumm both studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and started working together in 1998. They operate in a zone between fashion, art and photography, with shifting perspectives, where images move back and forth between different meanings. In this shoot for Baron Magazine, Blommers and Schumm made normal objects appear erotic. ‘It’s nice that people think they are perverts, looking at these boring still lifes,’ they say. Last week when the 2008 ARIA nominations were released, I was so happy to see the recognition of Melbourne’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Their album Primary Colours is pure, unadulterated Aussie rock, standing out from the numerous electro releases we’ve had this year. The band manages to capture that wonderful pub-vibe without any pretension or tragic nostalgia. Primary Colours speaks to people who still seek an existence that is all about wearing ripped jeans, loitering and punching people in the face … not in a violent way, but because your fist flailed in that direction while you were thrashing around front of stage.

Now this is fun. This 3D watch dial actually jumps to life.
