Joe Hill’s book Horns

It seems like I always stumble across Joe Hill’s writing in a time of desperate need for something to read. Most recently was when I was on tour and searching up and down for a good bookstore. Just as I’d given up and decided no one reads in San Diego, we found a little indie bookstore and Horns jumped at me off one of the shelves. Read more

Vanmoof bikes

I really love the design lines of Vanmoof bikes. As it is with a lot of great design, a key feature of the bike is what’s not in the product: no gears; no hand-brakes (remember those awesome back-brakes from your BMX as a kid? Well, they’re back!). The lights are built-in and charged via USB or the sun. Damn, I really want one.

Nude Bike Ride in Madrid

‘Indecent sinners, you are!’ screamed a Spanish granny, waving her cane at a gaggle of naked cyclists. Across the street, a passerby dropped his shopping bags, stripped to his tennies, and sprinted off to join the pack. This is Madrid’s annual Ciclonudista, a bike event in which hundreds of brazen activists gather in the nude for a rollicking ride to raise awareness for bicycle culture in the Spanish capital. Underwater dog photography by Seth Casteel

Did I ever tell you how much of a dog person I am? Well, my friend, I am telling you now that Seth Casteel’s underwater photos of dogs splashing into pools makes me extraordinarily giddy, because, I must confess, am extremely pleased by the canine animals. Read more

CRASS/MICKEY T-shirt

There’s a bit of a Micky Mouse mysticism meme going around lately, and I’m super happy it got combined with Crass in this amazing Cubopop T-shirt, if only for a brief moment before the cease and desists get issued.

It’s often assumed that great artists were born that way, which really isn’t true usually. Buddy Nestor, for instance, didn’t really start painting until the birth of his son in 1997. Now he’s a prolific painter, creating really demented portraits of women. I hope that’s not an indication of how he feels about his son. Read more

Stephen Gschmeissner’s new series of 3D insect photos seriously puts a whole new spin on seeing up close creepy crawlies in the movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. The 62 year-old scientific photographer zoomed in 150 times to showcase what termites, flies, beetles and other every day insects really look like in creative macro fashion. Read more

Says Van She bassist and vocalist Matt Van Schie about the Bush Tetras track — Too Many Creeps — from 1982: ‘I LOOOVE this tune. It opens with a perfect snare roll, and then the counter bass and guitar rhythms make it so cool. The lyrics are even more valid today. They’re one of my favourite bands of all time, and so many people try to do what they did for real. What a time! I wish I was born back then in New York, hanging out with these kids. Ahhhh!!’

Canadian designer Michael Surtees takes pictures of the same patch of sky every day as seen from his Manhattan apartment. Read more

Sometimes tests are just too hard. Sometimes they’re just dumb. Funny Exam Answers collects all the funniest and most ridiculous results of students who may not have book smarts, but are quite clever and creative in other ways.

The pan flutes can get a little much, but I still really like Mariee Sioux debut studio album Faces in the Rocks. I’m hoping she has a new album in the works. Listen to her cover of the Cure’s Love Song below.
