VisuaLingual Seed Bombs at Anthropologie

I had an ex-girlfriend who worked at Anthropologie, and I always thought the store appealed to the blandest notion of tastefulness, but VisuaLingual’s Seed Bombs — little pouches of seeds encased in balls of soil that you can simply chuck into your garden or even into an empty lot to get beautiful plants to grow — are pretty awesome, a little bit of anarcho-punk culture made corporate. The seeds included are tailored to the region of the US you live in — the West Coast, the Midwest, or the East Coast. I’d be glad to help sell these things to the monied hordes of Sex and the City devotees.

Drawings of animals by Maria Elina

It’s funny that as alienated as we are from animals in this modern world, people still feel compelled to draw them as if it were one of our core instincts. Argentine artist Maria Elina does excellent drawings of anthropomorphized animals. Excellent, I say. Trust me, I look at the internet all day. Read more

Surreal sculptures by Ben Wheele

Honestly, writing about art (and music, for that matter) is kind of an awful task because good art speaks for itself. Such is the case with Ben Wheele’s surreal sculptures and videos. I use the word ‘surreal’ to describe 90% of the art I like not because I’m a lazy writer, but because there’s really not much more to say, and I like surreal and grotesque shit. Read more

I’ve been admiring the work of Portland illustrator John Klassen for a while now. I’m irrepressibly drawn to his muted, textured landscapes, in all their mysterious glory. No coincidence then that a Coraline section should have recently appeared on his site. It just makes me want to see the movie even more. Read more

Is the soul colored or is it black and white? I find this quite confusing, since I believe that a colored soul is necessary for producing colored things. But then again, I’m sure that true color often comes from the deepest broken, damaged and divided black of one’s soul. Digital Jacklight is a mission to try and find out.

Growing up on the road in the deep south of America will either maim you or make you stronger. In Ryan Bingham’s case, it was the latter. Read more
