Scanners’ We Never Close Our Eyes

London-based Scanners will be dropping their Stephen Hague (New Order) produced sophomore album, Submarine, next week on Dim Mak. The band are then headed to South by Southwest. Klaxons

London-based indie-prog group Klaxons take their name from the Greek word ‘to shriek’. We interviewed vocalist and keyboardist, Jamie Righton, and asked him why, unlike many of their contemporaries, none of them grew up to become great footballers: ‘Me and Simon are from Stratford-upon-Avon and the only famous footballer to ever come from there is Gary Barnett! Jamie’s from Bournemouth and there are even less from there. I was asked to play for the Tottenham Hotspur Legends and Celebrities team in a new Sky TV programme but it clashes with our US tour. New work from Swedish illustrator Karin Söderquist

I’m a Swedish illustrator based in London. At first glance my work looks sweet and innocent; it’s filled with pastel colours and cute animals. But some of the pieces also have darker themes in them. To the North Pole, for example, tells the story of two sisters’ journey to the Arctic where they meet a grim end in the belly of a polar bear. Read more

Something at the root of old American rock n roll will always grip the contemporary audiophiles, no matter what. It’s that raw soulfulness that came pouring through the speakers then, just as it might now, whenever played loud and careless of what a neighbor might think. Sure, you might think it’s a bygone era in music, one that’s merely left to the ol’ classic-rock radio station these days. But nostalgia aside, the talent that’s been concentrated in Leopold and His Fiction really makes me think, ‘holy shit, it’s true—the essence of rock n roll music will never die if it keeps passing along and aging like this’. Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros

Edward Sharpe looks so much like the ideal Western image of a young Jesus Christ, it’s almost unsettling. Conceptually, that might be half the point, irony and all that good-looking fun as a rock star, or perhaps not. Regardless, Sharpe and his nine, yes nine, Magnetic Zero friends make one hell of a wanderlust band — and we can’t wait to see them again on their current stateside tour. In particular, we’d like to acknowledge that awesome old-school bus of theirs (though it’s probably not all that good for the environment). Read more
