Creative letterbox designs

Now even letterbox designers are getting creative. Is nothing sacred these days? Remember when the postman would simply shimmy up to a small mailbox slot and deposit the latest batch of bills and reminder notices? When their only concern was avoiding the ubiquitous angry dog? Well, these days, the poor guy or gal practically needs a degree in applied engineering just to figure out where that damn letter slot actually is.

Vibrant, colourful photos of New York in 1971

We love the voyeuristic thrill of these photos by Gentle Giant that ran on the Retronaut website and reveal a vibrant, thriving, bustling New York in 1971 that looks vaguely similar to the New York that I experienced between 2006 and 2011. Minus the beehive hairdoes, flares, and the big red phone booths, of course. Read more

Isa Genzken is a great installation artist. I find her work timeless, funny, and really unpredictable. She’s also very private and never does interviews about her work. Instead, she upholds the idea that her art is a language and doesn’t need translation. Read more

These photographs are so good I bought the book. I discovered Merkley??? on Flickr. This bearded photographer is a slightly unnerving straight-talking San Franciscan whose images of friends (mainly wannabe models) push the boundaries of symmetry, skin tone, colour and pleasure to the very limits.

The Hatton hotel epitomises Melbourne cool. Those who value design, location, and luxury will find The Hatton the perfect Melbourne base. Read more

Major Stars are another throwback ’70s rock band, playing Sabbath-flavored, guitar-driven psych tunes. The band’s music also skews heavily towards the Acid Mothers Temple end of the ’70s revival thing rather than the Wolfmother side, another plus. Nope, rock still isn’t dead.

Australian label Eliza Clare/Adornus is the creative project of Samantha Grant, Sally Wilson and Emma Jackson and is named after Sarah Eliza Clare, a noted couturier in Sydney during the 1930s and 40s who was actively involved in the fashion industry until her early 70s. Read more
