Contemporary dance by Hiroaki Umeda
In this contemporary dance performance, Hiroaki Umeda alongside some extraordinary lighting design come together to create a visual spectacle to a soundtrack akin to white noise. Umeda’s masterclass hip hop influenced choreography is awe-inspiring, and each move he makes is enhanced by the array of perspectives and illusions the lighting work creates.
Cloudscapes at the Venice Biennale
The premise behind this architectural installation, featured in this year’s Venice Biennale, is that clouds are nature’s very own framing tool. This poetic tribute to clouds captures the stuff that dreams are made from, and thanks to the engineering team, Transsolar and Japanese-based Tetsuo Kondo architects, people can feel the ethereal texture of walking amongst clouds without having to kiss the sky. These Minova ceramic knives with gorgeous images printed onto the blades are freaking badass, but I want them to make one with skulls and dragons and stuff. That’s the one I would tell some rich person to buy for me.
Kristen Ferrell’s artwork is, as her bio puts it, beauty vs. grotesque’ and I’ve always been fascinated by it. I’m not an art critic, but my kids refer to her work as both ‘really beautiful’ and ‘really icky’, which I think sums it up nicely. Read more
Ten Masked Men are a British parody band that does death metal covers of famous pop songs by Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, and many others. One of my favorites is their cover of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me a River’. It’s epic.
Herzog and de Meuron, the Swiss architects, have led the way with this re-use of the existing building fabric of CaixaForum in Madrid. Rather than being slavish to the existing openings, the building has been cut away for a contemporary practicality. We think this is an example of heritage not getting in the way of progress. Check out a similar concept of a previous post re-using the city fabric, where we were dreaming of such thing.
Creature Mag is a very cool website showcasing the best in new Illustrators. Great little themes such as Freak Of The Week and Happy Fridays. They call for new contributors and want people to get involved. So get involved.
Black Eyed Dog is the project of Fabio Parrinello, a singer-songwriter from Varese, in northern Italy. His second album, Rhaianuledada (Songs To Sissy), brims with a brooding intensity, referencing the best British folk ballads of the past. Rhaianuledada (Songs To Sissy) was recorded at Vicolo Recording Studio in Sicily by Fabio Genco and was mastered by Luca Martegani in Varese. Listen to the track Honeysuckle Gal.
