Creative Home Brewing
To some, home brewing is the mere transformation of hopped Wort into a tanned and carbonated alcoholic beverage. But for Connie Anthes and Jon and Julian Berengut — with respective backgrounds in Brand Identity, Product Design, and Theoretical Physics — they see beer brewing as more than just a refreshing reward. They see it as a creative Brand Identity project.
The beers’ variety, name and logo design are all agreed upon prior to the fermentation process. Once the liquid is ready to be bottled, custom laser cut stencil logos are sprayed on with enamel. Osama Bin Lager, The Morning After Pils, and the Golden Shower Ale are just a few of their many engaging beer creations. And all their friends (including myself) can’t get enough of them. Who knew Osama could be so delicious?

A year ago you could happily find me here, writing for Lost At E Minor, and cooking away in Los Angeles restaurant kitchens. A year later, I’ve launched Sqirl (for the old saying ‘Squirreling Things Away’), a preservation company dedicated to jams, jellies, and marmalades made from certified organic seasonal fruit no more than 200 miles from Sqirl’s commercial kitchen. ‘Tis the season for hard cider. So says Eric Asimov, and people tend to heed his recommendations. At least, I do. So while I scour my favorite haunts for the beautiful natural cider from Julien Frémont’s symbiotic Apple Orchard and Cattle Farm in Normandy, France (you must find this), I’m also looking for Lobo’s honest Cider rendition: cloudy and unfiltered from Adelaide Hills, Australian apples. For people with a passion of food and design alike, this is one book that deserves to be added to the cookbook library. I’ve always had this urge to experience the great American outdoors, that picturesque world that I’ve seen in countless John Candy reruns. Yes, I’d stay in a rustic log cabin, surrounded by chipmunks and coyotes and sing John Denver songs by the fireplace. Hmmm. Maybe I’ll make it happen one day. Maybe? Nah. [painting by Mark Ryden]
Improv Everywhere strikes again with a spontaneous musical in a Los Angeles mall. Wireless microphones hooked up to the mall’s PA system ensured the feeding masses didn’t slip into Cinnabon-induced comas until after the show was over. Note especially the angry dude in sunglasses at about 2:51 — apparently he thinks nothing can ever top Rent.

My friend Sam moved to Portland and subsequently discovered she hates fedoras. She started this blog to document her hatred.
I almost forgot — metal is really about being drunk, pissed, offensive, and satanic. I have Bestial Mockery to thank for this. Their no-frills black thrash is barebones and snarling without being too dead-pan serious. These guys from Sweden are clearly having a blast worshiping the Dark One in the tradition of old-school bands like Venom, early Bathory, and Sodom. Nothing too original here, but it’s fun as hell.
The Kawaii floating rings from SouZou Creations range from beer pouring and gravy boats, to tea, all curiously perched atop your ring finger. Read more
