The sunny tunes of Princeton

I’ve  been on a severe Kinks kick as of late. So it’s not surprising that I’ve fallen in love with Princeton — an LA band similarly formed in part by brothers (in this case twins) Jesse and Matt Kivel. Princeton echoes soothing Washed Out beats, coupled with Biff Ross wit-romantic filled lyrics (‘Show Some Love, When Your Man Gets Home’), and the layered vocal harmonies of the Beach Boys. Calypso Gold, Princeton’s single, is a fine example of this mix with the added bonus of invoking LA’s fun-in-the-sun vibe anywhere you may be.

Daniella White is the designer of Plumed Serpent, extravagant headdresses that she hand makes herself in Los Angeles. Each headdress is a magical blend of feathers, recycled furs, vintage jewels and gems, fine fabrics and chains. You truly become a goddess, a queen or whatever your heart desires when you wear her pieces. Where do you wear them? I like to walk around the house in my bathrobe with my fancy Plumed Serpent pieces. Yes, I collect them and I feel fabulous. Read more

Sqirl: a new preserve company

A year ago you could happily find me here, writing for Lost At E Minor, and cooking away in Los Angeles restaurant kitchens. A year later, I’ve launched Sqirl (for the old saying ‘Squirreling Things Away’), a preservation company dedicated to jams, jellies, and marmalades made from certified organic seasonal fruit no more than 200 miles from Sqirl’s commercial kitchen. Lobo’s Apple Cider

‘Tis the season for hard cider. So says Eric Asimov, and people tend to heed his recommendations. At least, I do. So while I scour my favorite haunts for the beautiful natural cider from Julien Frémont’s symbiotic Apple Orchard and Cattle Farm in Normandy, France (you must find this), I’m also looking for Lobo’s honest Cider rendition: cloudy and unfiltered from Adelaide Hills, Australian apples. Zachary Rossman’s works on paper look like portals to alternate universes where human understandings of good and evil don’t apply.

British designer Emma Smart designed these cool papercraft lunchboxes that unfold into place settings. The boxes will be sold at ASDA supermarkets in the UK, and each of the three designs come packed with three different lunches.

Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Set in the 1980s, We Own The Night shows a real nostalgia for that period — particularly in the costumes. Read more

The Big Picture’s photo essays are some of the best around: insightful, timely and often confronting in the way great photo essays are. Complementing The Big Picture is The Big Caption, a parody site ‘wherein jokes and statements are made using typography’. Sometimes insightful and always snarky, it pairs poignant photography with blunt observations using a thread of hostility. Read more

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
