Hamburger skirts, tank tops in the shape of turquoise elephants, and a pink cupcake tutu bustier? No, I’m not on an acid trip and watching cartoons. I’m describing the work of the most exciting and colorful new label out there: New York Couture. While their range may seem the stuff Harajuku girls and ravers dream of, it’s certainly got me mesmerized, wishing I was coordinated enough to pull off one of these pieces.
Surrounded by the enchanting air of a secluded island, Louisa Richwhite’s childhood initiated her passions for all things nocturnal and mystical. In later years, her childhood would become the muse for the evolution of her alter-ego, Violet Darkling, the maker of magical little wonders to adorn your wardrobe with a certain cryptic-chic panache. Created by Australian label Eleventh Commandment on one hundred percent premium combed cotton, the design on this custom made tee is a hand-sketch by Sydney artist Joshua Oldfield of Kate Moss enjoying some coke. As she does! Apparently.
People tend to think we illustrators carry around our sketchbooks everywhere. A confession: I don’t. That is one of the reason why I love looking at other illustrator’s sketchbooks. Virginia-based Tin Salamunic’s sketchbook tells me a bit about an everyday life in Richmond. And his obsession for cars. Read more

This isn’t an outdoor art installation, but it is still somewhat curated. Or maybe hoarded is a better description. Somewhere in the inner western suburb of Sydney‘s Summer Hill, there is a brightly coloured collection of garden gnomes on display. The owner of the home is yet to be seen, but there are hundreds of gnomes, side by side, all with equally dopey expressions on their faces and accompanied by a second fixation: caterpillar soft toys. There are so many gnomes, the garden is no longer visible. Maybe it’s an Amelie style prank that has just piled up over the years? Read more

The song Blasphemous Rumours by Depeche Mode is just about the most dark, beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. There’s something very compelling about it all: it’s gloomy and depressing during the verses, but then this sexy, almost hypnotically melodic chorus bursts in out of nowhere. The song came out in 1984 and is reputedly based on a true story, with singer Dave Gahan concluding at the end of it all: ‘I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours but I think that God’s got a sick sense of humour, and when I die, I expect to find Him laughing’. Brilliant.
