|Remember how, as a kid, teachers created an atmosphere of FUN as the best way to learn? It was an inspired place for imagination and support. Hmmm, well it seems adults get the short end of the stick, playing only a game of ‘serious’ and ‘responsibility’. So when I came across this video, it was interesting to see life’s playground had merged into the adult world. Yipeeee! Adults need to have some fun, too.

I’ve just discovered the work of Arien Valizadeh and I’m very impressed. His Iranian-American background (he studied under a master Farsi Calligrapher) has shaped his artistic vision, which maintains the classical presence of Persian figurative painting. If that’s all too much, then explore his use of print and pattern and the dramatic color schemes he employs.
Many of Michael Lierly’s canvases seem to communicate, through a brash oil technique and vibrant colors and figures, a kind of primal confusion of mood. I’ve been wanting one of his gigantic, enfuriated babies on my wall for over a year now.

There’s something quite attractively kitsch about the Lucky Dragons’ latest release, Dream Island Laughing Language. It’s undoubtedly unusual, and not too friendly on the ears, but something warm and fuzzy keeps creeping out of the broken drum rhythms and looped vocals. It’s a mish-mash of jangly folk licks, Squarepusher-style drum ‘n bass with a few Coco Rosie-esque experimental sound effects thrown in: intriguing, original, and fairly hard to describe!
