Sick Weapons
by Anointed Best New Band of 2009 by Baltimore’s City Paper, Sick Weapons embody basically what’s so great about this town — trash, and good times. They spit out sloppy, warbling, ear-piercing punk that’s more giddy than it is snarling, with frontwoman Ellie Beziat channeling Poly Styrene without being overly conscious of it. With songs like If You Love Me Take Me to the Hospital, The Prettiest Racist in Town, and Orgy on the China Train, it’s apparent these guys have their heads in a lot of unseemly places, but not up their own butts.

I haven’t been even the least bit interested in punk-derived music in a long time, particularly bands taking their cues from 90s hardcore. Baltimore’s Witch Hat is changing that by being just weird enough (they used to lean more in the spazzy direction of Men’s Recovery Project), and just heavy enough (there’s a strong tinge of Cryptic Slaughter-style thrash) to keep me interested.

Unfortunately, it’s illegal to actually feed a tree when you die in a lot of places due to health codes requiring coffins or other such “sanitary.” measures. Poetree provides the next best thing, an urn into which you can plant a tree. Personally, I want a Tibetan sky burial while My Bloody Valentine’s To Here Knows When blasts from speakers all around.

California’s Cerasoli:LeBasse Gallery has just moved to new digs on Washington Boulevard, Culver City. And to celebrate the re-launch they have an exhibition running featuring the work of Deth P Sun, Mari Inukai [above] and Melissa Haslam, amongst others. This inaugural exhibition, the aptly titled Blender, runs until November 1st.
His name is Marshall Ace Drummond, which makes his initials MAD. At just over 8 months old, you don’t need to be clucky to appreciate his outfits: from Baby Gap to Cheap Monday, and sometimes not much more than a cheeky grin. This bub oozes charisma and his clothes suit him to a tee (pun intended).
New York’s Infinity Window make some tripped-out, droning, psychedelic raagas that would be appropriate scoring films by Kenneth Anger or John Carpenter. Ominous and dark, the duo makes sounds like the rebirth of an ancient god.

I love the new range of plaid collared shirts from the aptly named Just Another Cheap Shirt,. When I walked into their showroom in Manhattan a few weeks back, my eyes nearly popped out of head at the sight of so many colours across so many shirts across so much space. Italian brand Brionvega has resurrected the classy Radiofonografio piece first created in 1965. The updated version is just like the original turntable/radio unit, but also has a CD/DVD player.
A little infectious lollipop rock anyone? Feel free to embarrass yourself singing along at the stoplight. If the other drivers give you that look, roll down the windows and spread the love.
