Speak

They may have the least stimulating band name in recent times, but don’t be fooled: Speak are all about innovative pop, their music invoking timeless melodies and energetic, synth-laden anthems. MGMT’s Flash Delirium

So MGMT are set to bring back their flutes, horns and psychedelic falsetto melodies on their forthcoming album, Congratulations. But this teaser track seems to cram every imaginable genre into the space of less than five minutes, resulting in an interesting sound, to say the least. You will either love, hate — or like myself — allow this groove to grow on you in time. [Listen to the new MGMT song Flash Delirium here]

Beach House’s Zebra

It’s soothing and sumptuous. It’s Zebra by Beach House. The harmonious opening track of Teen Dream is lovely and ridden with reverb. I don’t care if the album was leaked early. These songs will endure the test of time, just like their self-titled album has.

The Knife’s Colouring of Pigeons

Why am I so fond of The Knife’s latest track? Yes, the opera chanting opening takes me down memory lane: reminiscent of Edea’s theme song, reminding me of childhood Final Fantasy VIII playstation days. But ultimately this collaborative effort with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock is ambitiously rich in sparkling percussion and takes the listener on an ethereal journey to Darwinism.

Concept albums have always been a hit or miss affair, all too often to be taken with a pinch of salt. Some work brilliantly; many fall flat on their esoteric face. Dr John’s response to Hurricane Katrina is an intriguing album. Some is rousing, some depressing: it’s littered with political statements, perhaps too much at times but given it’s purpose the over-saturation isn’t surprising. Read more

Scanners’ new single Salvation

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
