Burzum’s Belus

Varg Vikernes, aka Burzum, finally emerged from prison last year and immediately set to work recording a new album. Half the metal world has waited with bated breath to see whether post-prison Burzum would be a continuation of the strange, awkward, ‘ambient’ sound Vikernes developed while incarcerated, or would it be a return to the genre that he helped pioneer. Turns out, old Varg has picked up right where he left off seventeen years ago, screeching his bearded head off as if he were a church-burning teenager again. Good to see the old Count Grishnackh back! Seriously, though, this is a great album.

Wrath at Hipsters Misguided [part two]

From the various responses I got from my previous post about hipster hate being misguided, most people defined a hipster as people who are very young (let’s say below 25), live off of their parents, and don’t contribute to the scene they glom onto. The problem I have with this is that in my personal experience, this is not how most people define hipsters. Read more

Mark Riddick

For nearly two decades, Mark Riddick has done illustrations, album covers, and t-shirts for metal bands such as Devourment, Hirax, Deceased, Kataklysm, Nunslaughter, Slayer, and countless others. No one draws rotting corpses, severed goat heads, or piles of maggots quite like him.

Sleevefacing

Sleevefacing is the art of using vinyl covers as part of a bigger picture. The term was coined by John Rostron, a DJ from Cardiff, who uploaded a couple of photos he’d taken with his friends back in 2007. You can find thousands of examples at Sleeveface, where you can also choose between different bands. Read more

While I am as impressed as anyone with an artist’s ability to render accurate and lifelike human figures, I’m more often compelled aesthetically by looser and more stylized images such as Camilla Engman’s. The wide-set eyes, bulbous bodies, and skewed proportions of the people and animals in Engman’s paintings lend them a certain expressiveness and melancholy. Read more

It’s official, I’m back into jewellery after detoxing from the 2001 chandelier earring craze. Aurélie Bidermann used to work at Sotheby’s New York in their Impressionist and Contemporary Art department but has been slowly raising though the ranks as one of the most innovative jewellery designers around today. Her website doesn’t showcase her fantastic Spring 09 pieces. Check out the accessory report on style.com for a good look at some of her new work.

The uber-hip French producer M83 has compiled a Secret Playlist for us in which he props Brian Eno, Julee Cruise, and Tears For Fears’ Head Over Heels: ‘This song was the biggest influence for my new album. Our track, Kim and Jesse, takes a lot of inspiration from 80s bands like Tears for Fears. This is one of my favourites’. Read the rest of M83’s Secret Playlist.

The Obama campaign was one of the most visually effective in recent history, brilliantly tapping modern marketing concepts and design to get its message across. The deceptively simple logo they chose stemmed from an amalgamation of a lot of different concepts the Obama designers came up with. Logo Design Love just posted all the different looks that weren’t used.

Driven by a wide spectrum of influences, the music of Brass Bed moves easily through an eclectic mix of genres: from alt-country ballads and progressive rock hooks, to sticky-sweet, heart-felt lyrics, and dissonant experimental freak-outs. As some wise folk have noted, it’s kinda like a cross between The Beach Boys and The Flaming Lips. Now, how could that be a bad thing? We have two of their songs — Olivia [listen below] and Polar Bird — available for free download in the Music Download section in the third column of Lost At E Minor.
