Waldemar and Max

I’m mesmerised by the work of Swedish photography duo Waldemar and Max. Nostalgic colour, thoughtful compositions and frozen subjects via timely slow shutter speeds are all wonderful techniques that shape their fashion photography. Waldemar and Max just shot the series Love in Vain for Fault Magazine this month.

Passion Pit remix Shout Out Louds

We love this remix by Cambridge’s electronic-pop sensation Passion Pit of Sweden’s Shout Out Louds’ first single, Fall Hard. Evidently so do Pitchfork who described it as being ’synthed up’. Indeed! We have a free download in our Music Download section. Listen to the Passion Pit remix of Shout Out Louds and then download it!

Robyn’s remix of El Perro del Mar’s Change of Heart

Swedish pop star Robyn has done her first ever remix for another artist: El Perro del Mar’s Change of Heart. The original single was taken from El Perro Del Mar’s album, Love Is Not Pop, of which she says: ‘Shortly after having finished touring with my second album From the Valley to the Stars, I started writing new songs. For some reason all the songs were about love, and in particular, that of the doomed kind. I’d spent some bad times in New York and some good times in Paris and both these cities have made a great imprint on this album and my current outlook on love. I’ve decided to call it Love Is Not Pop — the songs on the album are all pop songs and they are all about love. But naturally, it is not all as simple as that. As much as pop can be love and vice versa, I’d like to believe that love goes so much deeper than a pop song’. [Read a Secret Playlist by El Perro del Mar]

Bob Hund’s Fantastiskt’s only has 30 plays in it

Swedish rock band Bob Hund have released their latest single Fantastiskt (Fantastic) on a once-off print vinyl record that can only get played up to thirty times. The band then enlisted Martin Kann Design to design a suitable casing. So taking it literally he put it in a record player and etched lyrics to the song on the case. The record and the player were then listed on eBay and sold for a staggering US$3,650 to become the most expensive record ever in Sweden. Read more

Nathan DeYoung’s Windows and Mirrors

I am in total awe of Nathan DeYoung’s work from late last year titled Windows and Mirrors. This thoughtfully intelligent California-based artist pays particular observation to real life subjects around him, and the result is an inquisitive exploration into the human condition. Through inspirational conjured up characters at the tip of his paint brush, DeYoung is able to project his real life interpretations and analysis of those living around him onto canvas. Impressive, huh?

J Press Signature Chuck Bass Scarf

Call me loco, obsessed, whatever, but you can’t deny the hip, admirable effect this amazing Silk Patchwork Polka Dot Scarf by J.Press has — or could have — on the wearer. Being the Chuck Bass inclined lady that I am, I’m seriously thinking about spending $250 to wear this throughout our winter Down Under. Yew! Maybe I do watch too much Gossip Girl, after all.

MGMT’s Flash Delirium

So MGMT are set to bring back their flutes, horns and psychedelic falsetto melodies on their forthcoming album, Congratulations. But this teaser track seems to cram every imaginable genre into the space of less than five minutes, resulting in an interesting sound, to say the least. You will either love, hate — or like myself — allow this groove to grow on you in time. [Listen to the new MGMT song Flash Delirium here]

Though most know Max Bode as an art director over at the ubiquitous New Yorker, he is in fact quite an illustrator. Creating bright, clean illustrations, in a style at times reminiscent of old video games and cartoons, Bode work is a real treat, especially when stumbling across one of his illustrations in the New Yorker.

Jeans are a science, a science based on the deep knowledge of denim, washes and patterns, according to Dr. Denim, who have certainly twisted and turned every single atom of all their jeans into perfection. Each pair exudes a progressive design, made of superior quality at fair prices. My high waists have become the most desirable item in my wardrobe due to the denim’s strength which magically sculpts to your body yet leaves you embracing the comfort of wearing tracky-dacks. Seriously, there is nothing more important than owning a good-fitting pair of jeans. Dr. Denim delivers unisex designs that appeal to everyone.

We asked Ham and Pete, from New York band The Walkmen, to give us the rundown on the music that is inspiring them right now and they started off with a track from that elder statesmen of indie folk, Bonnie Prince Billy, Goin’ to Acapulco: ‘He did a remarkable job of putting a unique spin on a classic. It’s no small feat, and it’s a really impressive version’. Read more of The Walkmen’s Secret Playlist.

Will Cotton would have to be about the most appropriately named artist around. On this cold, windswept New York evening, I just want to crawl inside one of his saccharine sweet compositions and nibble on one of the clouds. Read more

Milke are inspired by the third French wave of Kitsune artists, electro pop, Stuart Price and The DFA, all mixed in with the pop sensibilities of Eurythmics, The Cure, Talking Heads, Stevie Wonder and Prince. Good thing Kris Kuksi channelled the trauma of growing up with an alcoholic stepfather, his disdain for ‘the typical American life and pop culture’, and his fascination with the macabre into obsessive, baroque assemblages, paintings, and drawings. Read more

Car from made ice

Forget battery powered vehicles. Cars made from ice are the future of transportation: no pollution, no honking horns, no painful rap music blasting out of souped up stereos. And if they melt, they melt. You just swim the rest of the way down the slipstream.

Scanners’ new single Salvation

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
