Baroque Bistro Patisserie
It’s official: Macarons are the new cupcakes. Tremendously colorful, bursting with flavor, and available in a range of tastes from classic to quirky, it’s clear why they’re the urban foodies must-have of 2010. And one hot spot gaining heaps of accolades for its crisp-on-outside, soft-on-the-inside version of these meringue-based biscuits is Baroque Patisserie, nestled in Sydney.
Along with a beautiful range of French pastries and cakes, Baroque churns out handmade, award-winning macarons in flavors from salted caramel and jasmine tea, to banana and avocado and the most popular, passionfruit with milk chocolate. And the patisserie will be adding Green and Gold varieties to their winning collection. Baroque’s also boasts a buzzing bistro, which according to those in the know, is certainly worth a trip in its own right for spot-on French fare. For now though, let’s skip straight to dessert.

The twenty minute walk from my house to Newtown takes me down cramped backstreets and past run-down buildings decorated with some of the best stencil art I’ve ever see. Al Farrow just did a show with me at the Martin Irvine Gallery in Washington DC. He builds religious reliquaries and mosques out of gun parts: AK47s and Uzis, in particular. They’re really beautiful. It sounds gimmicky but it’s actually extraordinary. The newer stuff that he’s doing is extremely time-consuming. His work is very meticulous, and the beauty of the craft is a striking contrast to how instantly and senselessly life can be taken. Read more

Named after the first openly gay politician in US history, Harvey Milk make some rather testosterone-heavy tunes. While appealing mostly to the stoner-rock and indie-metal set, the quintet from Athens, Georgia, aren’t afraid of a little melody, as the almost pop track Motown on their latest album, Life … the Best Game in Town, proves. But more often than not, the band gets down and dirty with some knuckle-dragging sludge rock. Amid the haze of searing guitar squeals, menacing power chords, and seismic bass rumbling, though, are some almost math-rock flourishes that hint at the brains behind the brawn.
