The Low Anthem

With their sophomore album, Providence-based trio The Low Anthem continues their Cohen and Waits-inspired folk-pop sound. Oh My God Charlie Darwin is a solid effort, displaying the band’s superb songwriting skills, channeling a wide range of influences – Nick Drake, Simon & Garfunkel, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Bob Dylan, even a slight tinge of Bruce Springsteen – but the disparate voices haven’t yet congealed into one that is uniquely of this band. It’s still a great listen, sure to make it onto the soundtracks of many a romance, and it should be interesting to see where this young band’s obvious potential will lead it.
