Soundwave, the Decepticon Transformer that, in the 1980s, could turn into a tape player, has now been updated as an MP3 player. This item by Takara is fully functional as both a music player and a Transformer, and the $80 price tag probably won’t be a deterrent for most toy geeks out there.

Rhiannon, Britney and co, the superstars (for better or for worse, with a strong lean towards the latter) of today, couldn’t hold a torch to the dancing divas of yesteryear, as this funkadelic clip from New York group Dee Lite proves.

I’m trying to figure out why Jason Urick’s hypnotic, polyrhythmic, and often ambient sound isn’t rave music. Is it because he has a beard? Or maybe it’s because there are textures, samples, and haunting drones that Urick puts together in a coherent, but often fragmented way that force you to zone in rather than zone out. You have to pay attention, even through the repetition, because the former WZT Hearts member is trying to piece together a narrative rather than a mere groove, even if there are parts that make you want to move your body.

The bluntness of the social messages in Buenos Aires-based artist Guillermo Jones’ digital art lends his work an endearing outsider-y quality, although he has had a formal art education. Illustrator Hope Gangloff has a stack of her ‘election’ tees from the previous US election available for sale which she created with the talented New York-based artist (and her hubbie, no less!), Ben Degen. Even though they were done to mark Bush’s reappointment, they still kinda sum up her mood on the tussle between Obama and McCain. ‘If the election gets stolen’, she says. ‘What say we burn down the capital instead of blogging about it?’. Hmmm, now there’s an idea.
The Kevin Ayers record Joy of a Toy from 1969 was released by Harvest Records and sits somewhere between Nick Drake and The Byrds. A record slightly ahead of its time, it was filled with enough interesting and clever arrangements and instrumentation to never bore. Girl on a Swing is my favorite tune for the tremolo guitar.

Pitched as ‘Ulterior Motives in Contemporary Art’, Disorder Disorder is running until November 14 at Penrith Regional Gallery.
