Alina Rudya
Alina Rudya is a photographer living and working in Kiev, Ukraine. Of this series, Soviet Women Dreaming of Future, she says, ‘The full name of this series of self-portraits is Soviet Peasant Woman Dreaming of her Bright Capitalistic Future. I was born in the era of Perestroika and didn’t live during Soviet era that much. Nevertheless, my image abroad, no mater how hard I try, is always impacted by my Soviet background. People are either joking or seriously think, that I’m different because I came from Ukraine. Even my foreign friends jokingly call me red or soviet. I love traveling and I feel myself very cosmopolitan. But every time I’m applying for a visa to travel to EU I feel myself as a Soviet peasant woman who wants to benefit from Western capitalistic wealth. So I created this series, because I wanted to show the stereotypical exaggerated view of me in the West’.

Documentary photos of Ukraine and Russia
Since leaving her Ukrainian homeland 14 years ago, Julia Nalivaiko is often asked, ‘What’s it like?. To answer the curious masses, she’s returned to Ukraine and Russia with Australian filmmaker Stuart McBratney to document the people, culture and food. They’re currently halfway through their 8-week shoot, and are posting video stills from the road. Here’s a sneak peak. Interior design website, Apartment Therapy, just posted some amazing pictures of ’70s rock stars in their parents’ homes. My favorite is of David Crosby and his dad [below]. The two look so completely opposite of each other that it’s hard to believe that it’s Crosby’s real dad. They also look like they’re barely concealing the contempt they have for each other. Crosby’s father was an Academy-Award-winning cinematographer who shot Tabu and High Noon, amongst other well-known films. Read more
Monarch are an incredibly grim, lumbering doom metal band from Basque country in France. Frontwoman Emilie Bresson is one of those rare female singers in metal that’s at once fierce and raspy, yet identifiably female, creating a haunting, menacing sound that can stand up against the most ragingly macho bands out there.
