Flashguns’ No Game Just Sport live by the fire place

|Lovers of Flashguns note that there’s an acoustic video of the trio’s latest demo No Games Just Sport, with Samuel and Olly’s raw playing and vocals pure bliss. As much as I wish these guys would visit Down Under (or at least tour outside of Europe), I respect the band’s global obscurity. Their sound reminds me that intelligent, melodic music still inhabits our world today.

Flashguns are a killer British trio who just survived a break-up following the recent departure of keyboard player, Oliver Wright. I’m delighted the guys chose to run strong as a three-piece and recorded some acoustic sessions on the road while supporting Bombay Bicycle Club’s UK tour. I don’t know about you, but I struggle with misplacing my little SanDisk USB stick. All proceed of the doll’s auction will benefit Project Angel Food, an organisation that works to provide food for people affected by HIV and AIDS.

Back in the day, New Zealand pop absurdists, Split Enz were the finest damn Australasian band around. This track, I Walk Away, off their final album — Spellbound — is their ultimate moment: a hefty dose of pure melodic majestry, wrapped around the aching lyrics and quirky arrangements of genius frontman, Neil Finn.

Driven by a wide spectrum of influences, the music of Brass Bed moves easily through an eclectic mix of genres: from alt-country ballads and progressive rock hooks, to sticky-sweet, heart-felt lyrics, and dissonant experimental freak-outs. As some wise folk have noted, it’s kinda like a cross between The Beach Boys and The Flaming Lips. Now, how could that be a bad thing?
