Designer and batik artist: Kathy Robinson Batik
If you travel down Germantown Avenue’s cobbled street to the Mt. Airy Section of Philadelphia you’ll come upon a tiny shop called called Artista Gallery. There you will find the whimsical, wispy and wonderful clothing of designer and batik artist, Katy Robinson. Batik is a process of dying fabric and creating designs using wax to block out patterns on the fabric. I did not fully appreciate her work until I actually tried on some of it. The pieces are unique, some are show stoppers, and all definitely meant to be worn with black to show off her work.

It must be in the jeans. The offspring of musical hedonists Richard and Linda Thompson, Teddy Thompson is one hell of a talented songwriter. Since his debut self-titled album came out in 2000, Thompson has been busy working on collaborative projects (including the ‘I’m Your Man’ tribute to Leonard Cohen) and solo recordings. Peter Nalitch is Russia’s answer to Manu Chao. His video for the song Guitar is a Borat-like jab at low-budget, post-Soviet awkwardness — absurd English lyrics, Eurotrash earnestness, bad wipes, and cheap subtitles. But its tongue-in-cheekness is quite apparent, and the song is disarmingly catchy and romantic.
The Dutch, the beautiful Dutch, in terms of architecture anyway. Here they have led the way again with this reuse of an old crane dock. A new glass office building, with a climatic façade of double glazing, motorized louvers on the outside and full length windows on the inside, hovers above the old dock. Read more

Lush was one of the best bands to come out of the indie-tastic early ’90s. They set the standard for shoegazey, ethereal pop from the British Isles, and they were about to break big with their 1996 album Lovelife before drummer Chris Acland hanged himself in his parents’ home.
