Paraty, Brazil
Paraty is a small town in the Costa Verde, midway between Rio and Sao Paulo. The city has a beautiful historic center, very well preserved colonial buildings, and stoned streets — testimony to the golden Portuguese time, when the gold from Minas Gerais was transported to the port of Paraty. In “exchange”, stones arrived via the Portuguese ships. At the east side of the historic center are two beaches and the fort, which are the main attractions. Jabaquara beach is calm and has a lot of kiosks where you can drink Cachaza, the liquor produced in the zone. Just 45 minutes from Paraty is Trindade, a place to chill out, with endless sunshine and great beaches. [Photos by Jessica Parra Nowajewski]

On the June 11, one night before the equivalent of Valentines Day in Brazil, the band Homemade Blockbuster performed an urban intervention which they glued heart-shaped stickers on the red lights all over town and released their new single called Heartlights.

Illustrator Paola Gaviria works out of Cali, Colombia, doing Action Drawing at Lugar a dudas, having spent last year in Amazonia, where she set up a club through which her neighbors could learn more about the arts, themselves and their environment. Another project she is involved is a blog where a group of female artists communicate through short vignettes.
When I visited San Francisco a few years ago, in the middle of a film festival, on a beautiful morning when Spring was starting to dress us more colorfully and happy. I went to SFMoMA and saw an installation by the artist Ann Hamilton called Indigo Blue. Before going back to the cinema, I took a look into the gift shop. Near the books, I found glasses, author postcards, and a wallet that surprised me. It was part of the Poketo Collection, designed by Alex Noriega, an illustrator from Barcelona. One of my favourite artists of the moment is Tanya Bennett, an English woman with a background in fashion, who wants to be Scottish, lives in Hong Kong, and loves drawing naked women. It doesn’t get more eclectic! Her Doris collection, in particular, is superb.
I love the black and white portrait work of Australian illustrator, Anthony Hayes, whose artwork has adorned vinyl toys, shoes and the walls, no doubt, of his grateful friends.
How old must Kermit be now? Not to old to collaborate with skater-friendly retailer Supreme and photographer Terry Richardson. Kermit, who usually wears nothing, has been hooked up with some new threads to advertise the brand. It seems Kermit and Terry are the perfect work partners: they’ve even released a video clip documenting the shoot.
Australia’s largest private museum will soon have some super futuristic and luxurious accommodations for guests. These awesome structures, designed by Nonda Katsilidis, definitely aim to reflect the art housed in the museum with their hyper modernist look.

I haven’t bought a CD in a while but I was strolling down Wellington’s Cuba Street looking for a bit of inspiration the other day when Liam Finn’s music tapped me politely on the shoulder and dragged me into the music store. Liam is New Zealand music royalty, of Neil Finn descent, although — with his wild hair and beard — he’s looking a bit more like a young Jesus these days. The record is made with the help of an analogue loop machine, and you’ll find the kind of stunning instrumental crescendos that I haven’t heard since The Beatles Hey Jude. He engages emotionally and spontaneously, with both skill and showmanship.
Quiksilver, the surfing apparel company, has just released what is being considered the world’s first eco-friendly watch. Made of sustainable ebony wood and running on automatic movement instead of batteries, this limited-edition watch is green down to the shipping of the raw materials. Every raw material used in making this watch is recyclable (the aluminum, the steel, and the mineral crystal are all 100% recyclable), and it also includes solvent free links and is shipped by sea rather than by air.
