Win a year’s subscription to Artist Music Journals

The Artist Music Journals are a limited edition small book series curated by Soundscreen Design, focusing on the connection between music and art. We have a one year subscription to give away to a lucky LAEM reader. To be in with a chance of winning, just leave a comment below with the name of the city you live in.

There are twelve monthly installments a year, each featuring 24 pages of visual work from prominent musicians and artists, and drawing inspiration from their connection to music.

Each edition is limited to 1000 copies, printed on 80# matte stock, offset, box-scored and saddle stitched, and comes packaged in a 10″ record jacket. Past editions have been created by Jason Yates, Shaun Flynn, Daniel Higgs, Hisham Bharoocha, and Bongout with upcoming installments from EE Storey, Bjorn Copeland, Seripop, Brian Roettinger, Post Typography, with more to be announced in the coming months.

Star Wars Uncut: a fully crowdsourced version of Episode IV

The project of creative technologist, Casey Pugh, this full length version of the George Lucas masterpiece was created from multiple 15 second segments recreated from the original movie and submitted by thousands of Star Wars fans, which were then spliced together by editor Aaron Valdez to form the final product. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.

Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend

Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

I just discovered your website tonight
And I’m sitting here, smiling with such delight
Inspired by the Journal described on the page
I now have desires only you can assuage

It’s all about senses and being alive
Seeing, hearing, creative drive
Those magical creatures that swirl in one’s head
You’ve turned into something made to be read!

It’s a brilliant concept, amazing idea
I truly appreciate. I‘m so, so sincere
And beautifully packaged from what I can glean
Exciting the senses like ripe nectarine

I so want to see, to share what you’ve made
To savour the contents like cool lemonade
I’ll be hoping and waiting by my letterbox
Cause from what I have read this Journal sure rocks!

He may have played Kipland Ronald Dynamite (Kip) in Napoleon Dynamite, but Californian photographer Aaron Ruell is much more comfortable behind the camera. We interviewed him recently: You’re an actor, filmmaker, and photographer. Is there a continuous theme or tone in your work across these mediums? ‘I think there is a connection between my photography and what I do in film as a director. I notice a similar tone between the two. I’m not sure that I set out for consistency between the two, it just happens. I still have issues with calling myself an “actor”. I’ve only done two films, and it’s not something that I’m out there actively pursuing. Those projects just happen to find me, so I can’t say that there’s a connection there’.

So I have this recurring dream. Well, not really a dream as such. More a footnote on the thesis on life; a ‘mental meandering’ where my mind flows to a secret place which only I and Paul McCartney can access. Read more

Improv Everywhere strikes again with a spontaneous musical in a Los Angeles mall. Wireless microphones hooked up to the mall’s PA system ensured the feeding masses didn’t slip into Cinnabon-induced comas until after the show was over. Note especially the angry dude in sunglasses at about 2:51 — apparently he thinks nothing can ever top Rent.

If you’re in New Orleans and you love barbeque, make sure to stop by The Joint in the Bywater neighborhood. Their brisket is outstanding, and for under $11 for a pound of the fatty, delicious beef and two sides, it’s a super good deal. Their ribs are also pretty good, but seriously, the brisket is the jam.

I have always been enamored with Tokyo street fashion, so this website is one of my favorite recent discoveries. New photos are updated every day, so it’s always fresh and exciting. Read more

Casio Keyboard Brooklyn trio Au Revoir Simone are about to release a collection of remixes and covers their musical friends have recorded of songs found on their second album, The Bird Of Music. Titled Reverse Migration, the record features re-workings by Best Fwends, Teenagers, Darkel, and more. We caught up with them recently. Why and when did you decide to release a remix album? Annie: ‘Our friends were making so many wonderful versions of our songs we wanted to share them with the world’. How did you select the artists? Annie: ‘Mostly they were friends who told us they wanted to do remixes! Very fun and easy’. Reverse Migration is out November 11 through the band’s own label, Our Secret Record Company. Listen to Ruff & Jam by Au Revoir Simone.
