Hipsters on Food Stamps

Heeb magazine founder Jennifer Bleyer recently interviewed me for an article about young creative types on food stamps. The editors at Salon.com decided that I am a hipster. I don’t really know what that means. Judging by the comments that the article generated, I’m some sort of lazy bum who can’t give up my artisinal chevre. I don’t need to go into detail defending my food choices, but all I’d like to say is that I try to buy healthy foods at the lowest prices. I never eat out. I love to cook, and I really need to control what goes into my food, so I cook every meal for myself. I often share with friends. Sick Weapons

Anointed Best New Band of 2009 by Baltimore’s City Paper, Sick Weapons embody basically what’s so great about this town — trash, and good times. They spit out sloppy, warbling, ear-piercing punk that’s more giddy than it is snarling, with frontwoman Ellie Beziat channeling Poly Styrene without being overly conscious of it. With songs like If You Love Me Take Me to the Hospital, The Prettiest Racist in Town, and Orgy on the China Train, it’s apparent these guys have their heads in a lot of unseemly places, but not up their own butts.

Textures in art

Lately I’ve been inspired by a lot of artists that use a lot of different textures in their work. I got a book about insect physiology from the Book Thing in Baltimore, and I’ve been using it to get ideas for various biological forms and patterns. The first one here was from an electron microscope photograph of a corn moth’s antennae. The second one was just a freeform thing that was playing with. Read more

Dr Denim’s new male cuts

If jeans were a drug, then Dr Denim’s would indubitably be my drug of choice. But better yet, our favourite Doc’s designs just keep getting cooler and, well … finer. I’m absolutely marvelled by their two latest fits: the Osmond (skinny fit) and Raymond (regular fit). While the Osmond features a bleached down wash in tight fits, the Raymond offers a second-hand look in grey scale denim. Suave, are they not?

A Minute Silence Knitwear

I’ve been stocking up early in preparation for winter, so this debut knitwear line by British label A Minute Silence has arrived with much convenience. The splendid and flamboyantly progressive unisex collection by designer duo Danny Sangra and Lynn Cockburn features wonderfully knitted cardigans, jumpers, socks and even blankets rich in conflicting colours and crazy patterns.

Nathan DeYoung’s Windows and Mirrors

I am in total awe of Nathan DeYoung’s work from late last year titled Windows and Mirrors. This thoughtfully intelligent California-based artist pays particular observation to real life subjects around him, and the result is an inquisitive exploration into the human condition. Through inspirational conjured up characters at the tip of his paint brush, DeYoung is able to project his real life interpretations and analysis of those living around him onto canvas. Impressive, huh?
