Nudo olive oil
If you’ve ever dreamt about owning your own olive grove in Italy then Nudo is for you. Based in Le Marche, Nudo is an olive grove where wanna-be-harvesters, like you, can adopt their own olive oil producing tree from a selection of enticing photos and charming farmer bios.
A few months later, that tree’s bountiful harvest arrives on their doorstep. Adoption of the tree provides local, small scale, artisanal farmers the financial security to preserve their traditional farming methods, rather than move towards mechanized techniques. It also gives the adopter total bragging rights, especially as the scrumptious oils are made exclusively from organic Italian olives, handpicked. Topping off Nudo’s concept is the packaging. Chic tins made from recycled materials boast bright plump olives that make you want to show off your tree’s hard work to all your friends.

Nudo Olive Oil is something that The Urban Grocer has been hooked on since the very beginning. The work of two British expats who have relocated to Le Marche, Italy, Nudo is an adopt-an-olive-tree program, where wannabe harvesters can own their own piece of an Italian olive tree and the gorgeous oil it produces. Money from the adoption program goes on to fund farmers who can continue to create 100% Italian olive oils using traditional and artisanal methods. We’re sold. Read more

With Christmas fast approaching, I’m still on the look-out for creative gifts for my loved ones. The other day I bumped into this vintage photography, which gave me an idea. The Grizzly Bear Chair apparently was a gift for American president Andrew Johnson in 1865 by a hunter and frontiersman named Seth Kinman. Read more

DM Stith recently signed to Asthmatic Kitty, the same label as Sufjan Stevens, and has a new EP out this week titled Curtain Speech, featuring contributions from Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond), Rafter, Sebastian Krueger and the string quartet Osso. Think Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear meets Arthur Russell. We got the rundown from him on his eight favourite songs right now and he kicked off with The Shangri-Las’ Out In The Streets [listen below]: ’1:22 – 1:43 is a miracle. I’ve never been so obsessed with twenty seconds of high-hat and high school girl shrieks: it’s a raging teenage fantasy that all the composition notebooks in all the lockers of 1965 couldn’t write better. That the singers have managed to preserve their naivety perfectly in this three minute song may be the reason I feel recording pop music is worthwhile’. Read the rest of DM Stith’s Secret Playlist.

Tallest Man on Earth, the rasping Swedish folk singer-songwriter and one of the unsung heroes of 2008, recently recorded the beautiful song A Field of Birds, a nice adjunct to his summer album release, Shallow Grave. His sound is so loose and unmanicured, and carries a poignancy reminiscent of the rusty, early Bob Dylan.
