Brazilian footwear designer Andreia Chaves blurs the line between art and fashion with her eye-breakingly unique series of shoe designs. Of her work, she says: ‘The fact that I grew up in a chaotic city like Sao Paulo, full of contrasts, being in contact with such diversity and constant exposure to different visual inputs, has inspired me in how I conceptualize my shoes. I can clearly see influence coming from my South American sense of versatility’.

Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Party, Sydney
I was lucky enough to be invited to Sydney’s Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange party, where Brazilian nightlife from Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro was joyfully brought into Sydney for a big crowd of competition winners. The party featured Brazil’s best, including electric performances from the samba sounds of Rhythm Brazil, before the dancefloor exploded with Bonde do Rolê blasting the crowd with incredible energy and catchy beats. When Rolling Stone picked Bonde do Rolê as one of ten bands to watch as far back as 2006, they were onto something. Read more
Destroy and Create in São Paulo, Brazil
A high-energy urban arts scene is emerging in Brazil’s biggest metropolis, making the ‘concrete jungle’, as the city is known, one of the ‘coolest’ places in the world right now. Exploring the relationship between art, architecture and skate, the Matilha Cultural Gallery (Cultural Pack) in the center of São Paulo is hosting the exhibition, Destroy and Create, until September 3. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design
Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

Samantha Everton’s latest exhibition, Vintage Dolls, explores ‘history, race and culture through magic realism’. Of the series, Everton says: ‘I was inspired by the innocent act of children playing dress ups and the way they re-enact adult behaviour, concepts and themes, without preconceptions or judgement’. The show runs at the Dickerson Gallery, Melbourne, between March 4-22 and at the Dickerson Gallery in Sydney between April 1-19.

Already with a Spectrum show under their belt, The Archerbolds are an up and coming Australian band well worth checking out. I saw the Sydney-based lads play recently at the Mars Hill Café and it was evident that they should be permanently rocking out on a real stage; not in front of coffee sippers. Their floating lyrics, smart guitar riffs and meaty bass lines are infused by The Strokes, Mars Volta, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin — ultimately producing a freshly spun modern-vintage sound. Lead vocalist and guitarist Geoffrey ‘Gep’ Rectin says The Archerbolds plan to create a solid sound for next year: ‘Over summer, we’re recording an EP and working on a set sound, defining more of an image’. If their track, Rest Your Soul, is anything to go by, then it should be pretty dandy.
