Your Scene Sucks
Illustrator Rob Dodi’s elaborate jab at contemporary youth culture leaves me feeling a little cold. While all of the 100 percent white archetypes defined by Your Scene Sucks seem familiar in a generic way (and are funny in that they ridicule some generic idea of various scenesters) they don’t really resemble anyone I know in real life, making this satire just short of biting for me. The Black Metal Knight is way off the mark — power metal, NWOBHM, thrash, and maybe some death metal bands might cop Frank Frazetta, but never a black metal band, and it would have been funnier to at least make an attempt to draw a typical teenage black metal kid rather than draw a portrait of Abbath from Immortal. To effectively ridicule something, one has to truly know and understand what one is ridiculing, and to me, Dodi doesn’t seem like he’s ever met any of the people he’s lampooning. Some may disagree. Apparently people know a lot of Inde Jesuses.

Heavy metal and hip-hop are perhaps the most popular forms of rebellion for kids the world over. In Malaysia, metal — particularly black metal — has taken such a strong hold that the Fatwa Council there banned it, fearing that the music would compel listeners to rebel against religion. Contrary to the council’s intentions, black metal is as popular as ever in Malaysia, and is a recognizable cultural touchstone there, as indicated by the above clip from the 2005 film Filem Rock.

No Age are doing something different to the mass of noise-laden, guitar-drum duos canvasing the lo-fi airwaves at the moment. I’m just not sure quite what. Their album, Nouns, is receiving top-rate reviews after sell-out crowds after screaming, obsessive fans. The music is simply massive: a vast landscape of heat haze, somehow both tranquil and manic, punctuated by singer Dean Sprouts backdrop of barely intelligible vocals and Randall’s distorted, archaic sounding drums.
This is Australian fashion designer Emma Mulholland’s second collection ever (if you count her graduation show) and she has pulled it together like a pro. The colourful collection makes strong references to surf culture and throws in touches of rave, tribal and psychedelic influences. Read more

The return of the Brionvega rr226
Italian brand Brionvega has resurrected the classy Radiofonografio piece first created in 1965. The updated version is just like the original turntable/radio unit, but also has a CD/DVD player.
Set up in 2011, Rebel Unlit is a printing collaboration between London based Artists Neil Butler and Shanney Mulcahy. They make short run screen-printed t-shirts and limited edition prints from their studio in East London. All the t shirts are fair traded and printed by hand and, as a result, each one is unique.
