Hotchocspoons

As soon as the weather turns cold, there are few things more satisfying than a proper cup of hot chocolate. Thanks then to the imaginative cats at the Chocolate Company and their brilliant Hotchocspoons. Put simply, Hotchocspoons consists of hot chocolate on a spoon that’s all ready to be dipped and swirled into a mug of steamy milk to make that perfect cuppa cocoa. The 45 plus flavors range from brownie walnut bourbon vanilla, to strawberry and pink pepper, to cocoa with whisky or amaretto. If you’re feeling uber adventurous, there is even a seaweed variety, too.

In a weird case of life imitating art, Baltimore Sun crime reporter Justin Fenton recently tweeted that someone named Omar Little Jr was arrested on gun charges.

Baltimore-based artist Rita Minissi is an amazing designer, and puts forth an incredibly consistent and highly composed aesthetic with her photos and images that involves riding gear, horses, and dark, transgressive female sexuality. She plays with identity, obscuring her own with masks, wigs, and hidden faces. Read more

While Flushing is still the place to go for the best Chinese food in New York City, those for whom the hour-long subway ride on the 7 is simply out of the question on most nights can now get their mapo tofu fix right in Manhattan. While the masses queue out the door at Joe’s Shanghai across the street, Famous Sichuan offers real-deal Sichuanese food such as cold sliced beef tendon in chili sauce, braised fish fillet with napa cabbage and roasted chili, and the most delicious cumin lamb this side of the East River. Yat-Kha are a stunning Tuvan band that combines throatsinging and traditional folk music with straight-up rock. Their album ReCovers is an awesome collection of covers of songs by Led Zeppelin, Joy Division, and Motörhead among many others, reflecting their general approach to music on the rest of their impressive catalog. Despite the modern elements, the Moscow-based group still conjures the vast steppes and endless skies of the small Russian republic in southern Siberia.

Luxury goods have been getting a bad rap lately, and for good reason. Now I don’t know how you roll, but we don’t know many people who enjoy covering themselves head-to-toe in someone else’s initials. Yet for some reason designers think that diamante logos and monogrammed tapestries are the best mediums to communicate their brand. So it’s just as well LA based eyewear label Barton Perreira doesn’t play by the rules. Starting out less than a year ago, you won’t find their designs getting over-excited by insignia. Instead, these guys hand make their frames in Japan to rely on precision, fit and design. And that’s the way it should be.

Sometime in 2010, the folks behind Dirty Dishes had the slightly silly idea of using cheeky vintage photos and putting them on dinner plates. After doing lots of research, talking to lots of people, and receiving loads of positive feedback, they wondered if this idea was so silly after all. And thus Dirty Dishes was born. Read more
