Efterklang’s Secret Playlist

|Otherworldly pop songs, both ambitious and engagingly intimate. Breathtaking panoramas of sound with few clear antecedents. Efterklang make music for the inspired. They recently began work on their third full-length album, with a release expected in the spring of 2010. So we checked in with them to get the inside word on the muisc that will be driving their new sound. They started with the Heather Broderick song, Cottonwood Bay [listen below]: ‘Heather is the sister to Peter Broderick, and like Peter did two years ago, Heather will be moving to Europe to join the Efterklang live band starting early next year. We have already played with her several times and we love her and we love her music. This song is from her debut album, From The Ground’.

Their music is amazing and challenging, their live performances are always something unique, and their artwork and music videos are always so freakin’ good. Russell Brand has defended Katie Perry’s honour with admirable humour following her somewhat out-sized appearance (or non-appearance, as the case may be) on Sesame Street the other week. He Tweeted to his nearly 1.5 million followers: ‘Today’s Sesame Street will not be brought to you by the number 34 or the letter D’ and ‘Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sex-with-me Street?’ Ah, yes Russell, we sure can.

I love the brashness of this ongoing series, Poupée Barbie, by French artist Jocelyn Grivaud, created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the doll that (most) every girl grew up with. Heavy metal and hip-hop are perhaps the most popular forms of rebellion for kids the world over. In Malaysia, metal — particularly black metal — has taken such a strong hold that the Fatwa Council there banned it, fearing that the music would compel listeners to rebel against religion. This website hosts a nice collection of quirky, sometimes mind-boggling, sculptures from around the world. There’s a certain Dali-esque feel to a lot of them – those surreal, dreamy hallucinations turned into a warped reality. I’ve always been a sucker for art that really catches you out for a few seconds, and these certainly do that.
Bay Area duo The Human Quena Orchestra sounds like a skyscraper falling in slow motion with their scraping, crashing, screeching drone pounded out of guitars, samplers, and circuit-bent electronics. Listen to their track Progress below.

It’s hard not to sigh at another vector face or skull and diamond combo. I’m guilty of skull overindulgence myself. But Six Letter Word — aka illustrator, Diogo Potes — balances skulls with other macabre themes to create art that actually looks fresh and interesting. Read more

Set up in 2011, Rebel Unlit is a printing collaboration between London based Artists Neil Butler and Shanney Mulcahy. They make short run screen-printed t-shirts and limited edition prints from their studio in East London. All the t shirts are fair traded and printed by hand and, as a result, each one is unique.
